Trading down. Smart or dumb?

I'd say that there's a high probability we trade down on day one. My reasoning is that our scouting staff seems to always draft O lineman from obscure schools that are big athletic guys. Teams have a high tendency at our draft spot to try to aggressively move back into the first. Being that Gettlemsn is obviously building for the future, it will give him more selections. While I wish we would draft the best WR available at that spot, I just don't see it happening with their draft philosophy of drafting best player available. That's just my .02. I predict a huddle meltdown when WR (X) is there and we trade out of day one.

Smart if it happens. On the flip side, with everyone wanting to trade down it may not take much to trade up and grab Taylor Lewan.

Lets say that someone in the 10-15 range would swap 1st Rd picks with us for our 3rd? Do we pull that trigger? We would be getting perhaps the most Athletic LT of the draft. Doubt that offer would be there but as a fan, would you approve or not?

Ehhhh I don't think so. I'd rather give up a pick from next year or a 4th.. Too much depth to pass up on a starter in the 3rd just to get Lewan. I wouldn't hate it, but I wouldn't love it.

Depends on the board, and it depends on who's left.

For the Panthers, the thought of trading down is neither smart nor dumb -- it's irrelevant. Gettleman's just not going to trade down.

If that were true he'd be a bad GM. There are opportunites to trade down (or up) every year, some good and some bad. That's for the GM to decide, and to pass up on a good opportunity just because of an "I don't trade down" philosophy would be retarded.

Oh, he's open to the trade scenario, it just has to be a fantastic deal. I think the reason he likes to stay put is you can get too cute with a trade. You get caught up in getting a trade and you end up not focusing enough on making the simple decision -- who should I take right now? I'm fine with it.

If a player we have highly rated falls and is there when we pick, we would be dumb to pass him up. If there is a cluster of guys available of about equal value and we have the opportunity to move down a couple of slots to get an extra pick, then it is smart.

Bingo!

On a side note: Don't give a fug what anyone thinks about starting a thread. Zod and his merry mod squad will work it out one way or another. Everyone else, just hatin' and trollin'.
