Trading down. Smart or dumb?

I don't think so, while Lewan is certainly worth the move, do we want to give up a third in such a talented and deep draft? I feel like you're likely passing up on a starter.

I agree! Definitely a catch 22! Can't say as it would upset me and it would feel good knowing we likely have a stellar LT for the next 10 years, but the mystery of what could have been would remain

Trading up is almost always dumb. Trading down is only smart if you can fleece the dummies trying to trade up, but trading down is mostly dumb too.

Depends on what you have to give up to trade up and what position the player plays that you are after determines the "dumb" factor.

if you trade up the pick must pan out. its more pressure and risk for the gm, player and whole team. heriay failed here and it did put the team backwards. just look at the deadskins....... what a mistake. early returns on austin and doin jordan have been meh at best.

nearly all gms want to trade back, cause it adds more darts to hit on players. now-a-days the gap between 1st and 3rds 4ths and even 7ths is much closer than before. 49ers have shown the best draft plan over the last few years.

I know this thread is about trading down, but I was doing a mock draft for the Texans on first pick, and the Panthers offered me their first, their 2015 first, and 2016 first for the #1 overall pick LOL. Of course I accepted because I wanted to see who they would take...ended up being Watkins. Maybe the spirit of Hurney lives on?

Anyway...back on topic. Apparently the Lions would be the break even team for us to trade down with (or one of the break even teams) with their 2nd and 3rd being equal in value to our 1st. I certainly wouldn't be opposed to it, especially if the WR/OTs available at 28 would be reaches ...it would make more sense to me to trade down and get multiple players who fit our needs and are BPA rather than going with pure BPA and drafting a LB or whatever.

Depends on who is there at pick 28. To trade it without knowing would be foolish. You never know who could end up falling due to the needs of the teams drafting before us & the needs they already filled thru FA. So, it would be a great idea in the right situation. However, cant really say now.
