Ron Rivera: Panthers may not need number 1 WR in 2014

I think the biggest issue here is Shula....

Cam didn't look like he was forced into being a game manager until we got rid of Chud.

I don't think it matters if we have a #1 wr or not Shula is going to ruin our offense no matter what IMO.

Exactly, people using Boldin clearly don't watch much football. He made clutch catch after contested clutch catch all playoff/SB long.

We scored more points last year with Shula than we did the year before with Chud.    Chud's best year is when we had Shockey and Olsen and ran a bunch of two tight end sets.   Our OL is attrocious.   I don't understand what you guys want Shula to do?

Seahawks #1 WR?

Baltimores #1 WR?

New England's #1 WR the past decade?

Honestly, New Orleans has had a collection of 2s since Colston's luster wore off of late.

IMO, weapons at the receiving positions, a protective and cohesive OL and a running game is what Cam needs to be successful. Drafting a couple of WRs and pairing them with Olsen, Cotchery, McNutt and King and allowing Cam to find the open guy and let his prowess take over should work. Maybe that was the thinking with how much Smitty was Cam's security blanket and maybe Smith was in his ear too much about getting him the ball. That being said, we haven't gad a good run game in two years and our OL is equally as depressing right now. Too many holes to fill in this offseason alone, but I really hope this front office realizes that our brand of offense last year was barely enjoyable to watch and needs to be tweaked.

So you're saying DG and RR have no goals and this approach isn't part of their strategy? They're just taking a lame approach with no reasoning? Interesting...

I am hopeful that Rivera's response was a smokescreen. If it wasn't then he is okay with mediocracy.

I didn't bring up DG. Never mentioned his name. Not sure why you mentioned him. I understand the poop he has been given with the salaries and salary cap. Tough decisions have to be made.

As has been stated before and can be looked up by stats....our OL was not atrocious (Seattle's was worse for example).

Gross having retired makes our OL much worse this year but Shula had the same group of guys/weapons as Chud did.(give or take a few injuries)

You are trying to tell me that Cam is the same QB under Shula? Shula is following the same path he has always followed and that is 25th+ ranked offenses all career long.

Right...that was exactly what I meant, too. Great contribution to the point.

Not sure I understand. You said, literally, you couldn't think of another's name. I got one immediately.

Also, Percy Harvin was injured most of last season. Then he shows up, and dominates the Super Bowl on multiple fronts. I think that's contributing.

Teams don't have true #1 receivers. You have guys that the defense still has to account for every single play and guys who create mismatches. Jimmy graham is the #1 receiver in New Orleans, yet Colston is the guy who is always watched for by the defense.

If you're wanting to play an offense that let's the offense just run the ball, you need to have a receiver the defense accounts for. That way, they can't just man up on every WR and put 8 guys in the box and stuff the run every play.

As of now, Jericho and King aren't guys who are going to demand respect from DBs.

There's your fuging point. Get over yourself.

I believe you value the ugly fat guys like I do. The Patriots have an oline that gets the job done. If Gettleman can fix our oline then the WR position becomes less reliant on a true #1. Oline is the key in my less than expert opinion.

No argument from me.

jesus christ ron you're supposed to be telling us all your draft strategy

You mean he didn't?

Harvin wasn't on the field the entire season...so in the context of this discussion he wasn't a #1 receiver that lead them to the best record in the NFL.  I thought there was only one Captain Obvious in this forum.

Olsen has to be accounted for by the defense.  A guy who caught 10 TD passes last year has to be accounted for by the defense. If they're not then we have a QB who will make the D pay for stacking the box.  Cam showed he could do that last year with below average receivers.

Your point was on par with our mediocre receivers.....keep pounding your chest though.
