Ron Rivera: Panthers may not need number 1 WR in 2014

My only problem with DG's philosophy this offseason is it looks like 2014 will be an audition or evaluation year for the offense. But with that said, I still think 2013's record of 12-4 was a shock to Gettleman. His plan all along has been to evaluate the young guys for a couple seasons until our salary cap mess goes away. 2013 happened and raised expectations. He's sticking to his plan in 2014 to see what he has on the roster. As a fan it sucks ass because I want to win now. I honestly think DG would be fine with 6-10 to 7-9 next year because his plan all along has been to navigate a calculated course through Hurney's mistake minefield. If he can somehow find young guys in the draft who step up again this year like last year, then all hail Gettleman.

You're exactly right. That is precisely the deal. It's frustrating for us because of the success last season and to stay pat or not aggressively enough (in our eyes) try to upgrade the wideouts to build on 12-4 seems crazy. It's like we were only a few pieces away from getting to the next level and now have almost taken too many steps back. I don't want to audition young guys on a previous division champion team. I want to find the guy and take over. Seems simple enough, even though it's not at all.

It's not like we aren't bringing in tons of WR as part of draft evals. I don't take what Rivers said to mean that we aren't going to draft talent at WR. We just aren't going to draft that guy and put him in the position of having to be a #1 receiver immediately because that's unlikely given where we are drafting.

This is just a realistic approach - draft talent you can develop, but don't base your offense around those guys until they are ready.

As others have said, we had a clear number 1 receiver last year and he's still on the team. I'll panic when we haven't drafted a receiver in the first four rounds. But I fully expect that we will draft WR early and that guy will play. He might not start immediately though (like KK last yr).

in before smokescreen.

but I said this in another thread, they want a clock killing offense, not a 40 point a game offense.

The problem is when our offense unintentionally kills the clock (like the 8 minute 3rd quarter drive in the 49ers game) because we don't have the right personnel/scheme/play calling to be able to score quickly when we need to.

This is our problem.  We all want to win NOW and think we need to do whatever it takes to do it. I, personally, would rather build a team that will be in the playoffs every year for a decade than do whatever it takes to win in 2014.  Who was "the guy" who was going to be THE GUY for the future?  I am a fan of Nicks and thought he'd be a good addition, but I wasn't ready to say he was going to be THE guy.

But seriously....what steps have we really taken back?  I'm just not seeing it.

Bunch of crybabies...unbelievable.

Will one of you please name this elusive, yet available "save the franchise, Offense and keep Cam here, #1 receiver."

We haven't had a True #1 receiver since we'vd heard Smitty saying he wanted a #1 to come in here to take some pressure off of him.

The "#1 receiver" you are talking about is a cap-crippling unicorn like Megatron or Jerry Rice...in our offense it's nothing more than a potential roster spot to add to our other two or three WRs already on the field.

How many true #1 receivers are in this draft?

How many of them will be available at #28?

Rivera said there's a possibility of fillingWR need through this WR deep draft. WTF more do you want or expect?

Go find a bridge, u bunch of Sally's. Give me a friggin' break.

Who is the Patriots number one?

I believe you value the ugly fat guys like I do. The Patriots have an oline that gets the job done. If Gettleman can fix our oline then the WR position becomes less reliant on a true #1. Oline is the key in my less than expert opinion.

Then why do you need Cam? If you want to run the ball (which they couldn't do last year). And just want your qb to manage the game, then go get Mark Sanchez. Cam is a weapon, throwing and running. He's capable of running a high octane offense, why neutralize him. You're putting a lion in the zoo.

You can have an explosive offense with a good defense. Good defense doesn't have to equal=boring offense. I'm convinced nobody on that staff knows poo about a real offense. Rivera we know is a defensive guy and that's where he spends his time. Shula, well his failures are well documented.

The biggest mistake this team can make is have a 100 million dollar qb, pay him 100 million, and make him a game manager.

I think the biggest issue here is Shula....

Cam didn't look like he was forced into being a game manager until we got rid of Chud.

I don't think it matters if we have a #1 wr or not Shula is going to ruin our offense no matter what IMO.

I'm convinced you didn't watch the Ravens' Super Bowl run, if you did you had your eyes closed. Without Boldin the ravens don't win a Super Bowl. He made big time plays in the playoffs and in the super bowl those WRs made play after play. Hell that Super Bowl is the biggest evidence that if your qb has weapons he can be dangerous and it got Joe that contract.

Exactly, people using Boldin clearly don't watch much football. He made clutch catch after contested clutch catch all playoff/SB long.

Perhaps I'm inaccurately equating losing Smitty/Gross and guys like Mitchell with going backwards temporarily. I know we will reload with new role players that will contribute on a comparable level as they did. Gross in the biggest loss, undoubtedly, and Smitty was declining, and Getts does have a track record of finding diamonds in the rough. Agree that I would rather have a consistent winner than JUST to win right now. I just want it all lol :)

Im glad Rivera gave us a non filtered opinion that obviously reveals the organizations true intentions towards the draft. ...you guys need more hobbies... getting all worked up over such an inconsequential comment

    • Film Room Playlist _ NFL Pro — Mozilla Firefox 2024-11-25 10-20-11.mp4 🎯🎯🎯 There were a couple of "fans" yesterday saying that this wasn't a helmet-to-helmet shot... 👀 Looks like based on where Moore was and where the play ended, he'd have gotten maybe just a yard or two more. Chuba was downed at the KC 16 and Moore was on his way back to the QB, so the offense got what they could for the most part. After reviewing the all-22, Bryce made the right call here. Tremble was the hot and KC sent both LBs. He gets it out with a clear pocket but it's quickly collapsing. If there was a little more time it looked like AT came free at the end but whether or not Bryce would've been upright still is another story. Smart move to get the completion and keep the field goal in play to stay alive. George Karlaftis is about to get himself a big ole hug and Bryce heaves it to where David Moore is going. Trent McDuffie slipped just a step or two before this shot, but we can see the clear DPI here as he's wrapped around David Moore before knocking him over as the ball gets there.
    • I’m taking a TE early day 3 Ian Thomas and Tremble are FA.  We should have no desire to bring them back.   There’s more than enough film of ball bouncing off their hands or facemask.
    • Daniel Jones sometimes would sling it for 300 or 400 yards.  That's my stance.  We know what Bryce is.  If you consistently play any QB at this level, they largely are going to end up w/ some good days/games.  last time Mahomes was at BOA, Teddy Bridgwater threw for 300+ yards and a couple TDs and the Matt Rhule Panthers almost took him down.  We know what Bryce is.  Now we got people predictably falling into a predictable trap.
