Ron Rivera: Panthers may not need number 1 WR in 2014

Frankly, i don't give a fug about a #1 WR, it isn't like SS was one over the last couple of years and 12-4 wasn't a bad record for a bottom feeding offense.

But we will need a OL to run and that seems to much easier to get in the short term. But all this crying over having a top receiving core really is just fans wanting a high powered offense to watch. That will take two years or longer, WR are pricey and guess what...we ain't got nothing to spend.

I have as much fun watching us executing a great defense as scoring points and if we can score some OL in the draft and add another big bodied slot receiver, I would be happy. Stuff them defensively and run the living crap out of the ball...and still have a better receiving core than last year...

I trust the coach and the GM, it's time for long term fixes and to be a contender every year...not every four.

So who was a #1 WR on the Seahawks last year? Jermaine Kearse?

Who was #1WR on the Ravens the year before? Anquan Boldin?

And #1WR on the Giants the year before that? Leading reciever was Hakeem Nicks?

In the past 5 years SuperBowls leading recievers (for the winning team) have been:

Doug Baldwin, Anquan Boldin, Hakeem Nicks, Jordy Nelson and Marques Colston

None of whom i would call top 10 surefire #1 WRs in the NFL

I'm convinced you didn't watch the Ravens' Super Bowl run, if you did you had your eyes closed. Without Boldin the ravens don't win a Super Bowl. He made big time plays in the playoffs and in the super bowl those WRs made play after play. Hell that Super Bowl is the biggest evidence that if your qb has weapons he can be dangerous and it got Joe that contract.

They all of a sudden don't need a #1 wr b/c they weren't able to get one. Not sure anyone who comes out of the draft will be effective immediately cause they usually aren't. They're gonna suck this yr is what he's basically telling you. Just preparing you for it early.

This has got all kinds of problems....

Seattle was definitely a run-first offense. Look at RW's attempts per game and the number of deep passes he had. If you're talking about their receivers last year: Tate is not a #1, Harvin was hurt constantly, Rice was hurt, Baldwin was a UDFA, Kearse was a UDFA.....where is this #1 you keep referring to? They have done a great job finding receivers to step up and be play makers, but they do not have a legitimate #1 receiver like a Green or Bryant or whoever. This is the model that the Panthers are going after.  Again....a strong OL + strong QB + more than decent running game = open WRs.

I don't want to talk about this season because the rosters are incomplete.  But the fact that they let Tate walk and cut Rice should tell you something about their belief in their "plug and play" WR system.

I agree the 49ers have good receivers....but who is their #1?  Davis? Isn't his production in line with Olsen's? Maybe a little higher? They still win by running the ball and playing great D - not by having a stud WR playmaker.

Olsen is our best receiver - not Smitty - and he's still on the team

You can call it "patient by fault" I call it waiting to see the final product before assessing how our team is going to be for the upcoming season. I see no reason to freak out until the roster is set (doesn't mean I won't freak out then).

If we improve the line significantly and add a WR, there is no reason why we can't control the TOP like we did this past season. You do realize we only gave up around 13 points a game last year? That means 14 points will win the game for you.

In another interview Rivera suggested Bell may be out next LT.....that is a reason for an unprecedented  freak out  . This was the reaction at my office.

HA!  If they don't do something to improve that position and have Bell starting at LT then I will be freaking out, too.  I can't freak out today because it's only March 27th.

I would almost bet that our first two picks in the draft this year will be o line unless there is some sort of wr bait that has really taken a fall and too juicy to pass up.  Gettleman will be digging for wr gems in the 3rd through 7 th rounds.

Is he under the impression the panthers could run the ball lastly year? Take away Cam's frantic scrambles and there is no run game.

Sent from the Carolina Huddle Ap

Newton only accounted for 1/4 of the rushing production. Having a healthy Stewart  and a Younger OL will take the run the game to the next level.

The run game accounted for 22TD's

Even having olsen as your number one receiver is a problem. Don' t see how people are okay with this, he is a above average if anything not good enough to have an offense centered around him, can't do anything after the catch and is not even a complete TE. doesn't dominate match ups at all. He should have a talented receiver core around him to take the pressure off. If he is ur first option that is concerning to me. I only pray this staff isn't this delusional just gotta wait for the draft.
