Ron Rivera: Panthers may not need number 1 WR in 2014

A drafted rookie may be able to become that down the road.  You can't draft a rookie and assume him to the your #1 option from the moment he steps foot on an NFL field.  If he does, then hell yeah!  But, you can't assume that's going to happen.  I realize there have been some guys in recent years who have done that, but historically speaking, WR generally has one of the longer learning curves in terms of adapting to the NFL game.

I know that

I'm saying if you don't draft one, you never will have one based on that thinking

I think you're misunderstanding what I'm saying.  I'm not saying to not draft one.  I'm simply saying that you can't draft one this year and immediately assume he's going to be your #1 WR as a rookie.  I think this is what Rivera is preparing people for - he realizes that no matter what moves they make at this point, we're not likely to have a legit #1 WR next season.  He knows that Panthers fans, despite the ups and downs through the years, are very accustomed to having that with Steve Smith.

well if you go by huddle logic, free agents are not worth the money and are overrated, it,s always wait till next year when it comes to the draft, and we always have other pressing needs to fill. The only positions that get neglected by this team are related to the passing game.

Thats the point, who knows what we have? No one knew Victor Cruz would be that, no one knew Doug Baldwin would be that.. these guys were undrafted and expected to be at best Practice Squad fodder yet have more rings and more catches in super bowls than Calvin Johnson, Andre Johnson, Brandon Marshall or any of the #1WRs currently in the league that people are so obsessed that we can only get in the first round

I'm not expecting Marvin McNutt or Tavares King to be Calvin Johnson, but if Doug Baldwin, Victor Cruz or Hakeem Nicks is the goal, then they have a shot to be at that level

The Giants had Nicks and Manningham when Cruz showed up. The Seahawks had Tate and Rice.

These teams drafted WRs in high rounds to build their team on when they lucked into these diamonds in the rough. They didn't bank their entire success as a team on UDFAs turning into Victor Cruz.

We don't even have a #2 guy on the roster. We don't have a guy who can go up and get the ball. All those teams that were named; especially Seattle, have guys who can and will make the acrobatic catch.

This is my concern.  I really hope we don't plan on going into the season with Cotchery as our only proven NFL WR.  He's shown what he is and it's not all that much.  Not a bad guy to have on your roster, but if he's the cornerstone of your WR corps... oh wee mayne.

But all those 4 WRs you mentioned have been shipped off since then (Although Manningham now is back after flopping in SanFran), if a #1WR is so god damn important, why aren't they keeping those guys around since they drafted them to build around them? Maybe because they were decent WRs whose numbers could easily be replaced by cheaper options via late draft picks such as Kearse and Baldwin.

If you can get a true nr. 1 guy of course you take him, but if you're drafting to get Nicks or Sidney Rice or Golden Tate, i think you have almost as good a chance to get them in later rounds as you do in the first, leaving you to take the best player available in the first round at positions where you believe finding a star is possible, be that a Lineman, Defensive back or an entirely third position
