Ron Rivera: Panthers may not need number 1 WR in 2014

jesus christ ron you're supposed to be telling us all your draft strategy

I get you where you are going with your sarcasm Philly B lol.....but when has Rivera ever taken the hidden approach. He has been one of the most transparent head coaches in the NFL. Typically when he says it he is thinking along those lines.

Now if this was Fox I would completely ignore that comment. We all know Fox use a fog machine when talking to the media. Our problem before this past break out season was his laid back approach. I don't know if he was protecting Gettleman and this offseason or not. It just doesn't make you feel confident when he is talking about matching 10 catches a game from a bottom 5 passing offense.

Thank you for making my point. Now, name a WR on our roster as good as any of those guys.

Thats the point, who knows what we have? No one knew Victor Cruz would be that, no one knew Doug Baldwin would be that.. these guys were undrafted and expected to be at best Practice Squad fodder yet have more rings and more catches in super bowls than Calvin Johnson, Andre Johnson, Brandon Marshall or any of the #1WRs currently in the league that people are so obsessed that we can only get in the first round

I'm not expecting Marvin McNutt or Tavares King to be Calvin Johnson, but if Doug Baldwin, Victor Cruz or Hakeem Nicks is the goal, then they have a shot to be at that level

Well, to be honest, what are the chances of us finding a #1 WR for 2014 at this point?  Even if we draft a WR at #28, he's probably not going to produce like a #1 WR as a rookie.  Hopefully he can become that, but very few guys come in and do that as a rookie.

The bottom line is that we're not likely to have a #1 WR in 2014, so get used to it.

I mean that's fine, but this is bigger than just next year. If you have none in 2014, how you expect to have one in 2015? and year on and on. What? You think we're going to sign a FA?

A drafted rookie may be able to become that down the road.  You can't draft a rookie and assume him to the your #1 option from the moment he steps foot on an NFL field.  If he does, then hell yeah!  But, you can't assume that's going to happen.  I realize there have been some guys in recent years who have done that, but historically speaking, WR generally has one of the longer learning curves in terms of adapting to the NFL game.
