Viable option in the second round?

I haven't looked at him much, but if he doesn't have the production in college to match his physical skill set I would be wary. If everything lines up I think he'd be a great prospect, but is he good enough to take over other guys already slotted in the second?

2011- 12 rec, 141 yds, 2 TD

2012- 51 rec, 805 yds, 6 TD

2013- 72 rec, 1096 yds, 9TDs

Aaron Dobson went in the late 2nd, so i can see him going there as well. i would love the panthers to get him in that 60th range. plus another good thing he does  is blocking on the edges(LaFell reference).

From the blog I posted here the other day which is updated daily with all pro days.

Somebody might have gotten a 4.38, but others were a bit higher, still good.

Cody Latimer, WR (6-foot-2 5/8, 215 pounds) — Due to a broken bone in his foot, Latimer was only able to run straight ahead and did not participate in any positional drills. He ran the 40-yard dash in 4.44 and 4.45 seconds. He also had a 39-inch vertical jump. Latimer was at the NFL Scouting Combine, but only competed in the bench press (in which he led his position group with 23 reps of 225 pounds). Latimer does not have a target date for another workout before the 2014 NFL Draft.

what's funny is a couple weeks ago this guy was consistently available in rounds 6 and 7 when i was doing fanspeak simulator drafts. he was a no brainer at that point. i started looking at him and where he was falling and thought that maybe i was missing something because he looked like such a good prospect to me. i'm guessing that the draft boards they were using was what was missing something regarding latimer.

that kid is as good as any WR in this class outside of the top 4-5 and when all is said and done, might be as good as them. there's a lot to like about him.

The thing is - I think he gets drafted as a top 5 WR when all is said and done, but that still might be in the 3rd round or heck, even 1st. I keep hearing about how NFL team's WR boards are all very different right now (and everyone is in consensus the WR depth is DEEP). That means there probably will be a lot of value late, but there should be some surprises early too.

Latimer is the guy I have my heart set on... but I think value is important too in this draft.

Realistically we shouldn't expect 6-3, 215, 4.39 40, 39 in vert to be sitting there waiting to get picked in the 4th

I know nothing of this guy but sitn me up for the fan club..he passes the eyeball test...and now has the measurables.

He looks like a faster Cordelle Patterson

Are you sure you mean Cordelle Patterson? Bc this guy seems less explosive but with a better catching ability. And he is slower than Patterson if you look at 40 times. Seems like a faster boldin to me.

Also one thing to note is he averaged 91.3 ypg last yr.

http://www.indystar.com/story/sports/college/indiana/2014/03/26/cody-latimer-impresses-shines-at-iu-pro-day/6929299/

this guy had his pro day today, and really impressed scouts. huge target at 6'3 215 pounds and ran a 4.38 today. put up 23 reps on the bench at the combine, but did not run any routes because he is coming off foot surgery. this guy catches balls in traffic, and had a pretty good game vs Michigan St, and their press CBs(one is considered the #1 CB in the draft.) considered a 3rd round guy but all the draftniks see him moving up in the draft.would love to grab this guy.

I have seen more than a few draftniks rank Latimer a 4-5 round grade.  Now of course that was before he ran a 4.38, but straight line speed doesn't a complete WR make.  If G-man picks him before the 4th, I'll be surprised.

STRENGTHS: Possesses thick, athletic-looking frame and an impressive speed/agility combination that enable him to separate consistently as a route-runner, and extend plays after the catch both in space and on contact. Flashes soft hands and good coordination when asked to extend and pluck the ball off his frame, and positions his body nicely when adjusting to balls thrown off stride.

Flashes the physicality and initial quickness to develop into a receiver who could beat press coverage at the next level, and is a willing blocker in the running game with room to improve his technique there.

WEAKNESSES: Occasional concentration issues leading to drops. Though Latimer exhibits burst and hip-sink to separate out of cuts, he seems to lack a second gear when asked to pull away vertically and may struggle to consistently threaten the top of the defense. As a route-runner, lacks precision at times as he'll round off his cuts, and he needs to get better at working his way back to the ball on hitches and comeback routes.

STRENGTHS  Very good size. Shows a jab step to get into routes cleanly and is equipped to combat the jam. Can use his frame and physicality to create separation on slants and “post-up” throws. Nice catch radius -- extends to snag throws off his body. Soft, dependable hands. Nice strength after the catch. Good blocker -- subdues cornerbacks, shields, stalks and sustains. Improved steadily over three years as a starter. WEAKNESSES

Is high-cut and shows some lower-body stiffness in his route running. Average burst off the line. Not a quick-twitch athlete -- could struggle to shake loose from more athletic corners. Lacks foot speed to separate vertically. Is straightlinish after the catch and will not make anyone miss. Marginal special-teams utility. Football was not his first love.

DRAFT PROJECTION  Rounds 4-5 BOTTOM LINE  A prep basketball standout, Latimer is a well-built, sure-handed, West Coast possession receiver whose hardwood background is evident in his leaping ability, body control and hand-eye coordination. Lacks ideal explosiveness, gear change and flexibility. Could be effective running slants and making contested catches to beat zone coverage and succeed in the red zone. Has a ceiling as a No. 3.

T

his is a very deep wide receiver class. There are superstars at the very top and intriguing potential superstars at the bottom. Followed by Cody Latimer close to a potential superstar and the other wide receivers below him. I think Latimer is a very good wide receiver with the potential to be a very productive wide receiver at the next level. With some special qualities to his game, but it’s hard to see him go Day 2 with all of the competition.

However, if he has a crazy combine and gets his forty time to 4.45 or lower, lights in the minds of scouts will go off. He has the physical stats to be considered over a lot of less physically gifted wide receivers. That could be his ticket to the third-round. But early Day 3 is close to where I see him going realistically, which will make him a bargain. With that said, I wish Cody Latimer the best of luck as he gets ready for the 2014 NFL draft process, and I hope he gets to play football at its highest level wherever he ends up being drafted.
