Rivera says Steve Smith no longer a deep threat.

Not really what he said.

What he said boils down to two points.

1) He's still fast, but not as fast as he was before.

2) His durability isn't what it used to be either.

Looking at last season, can anyone really argue those statements aren't valid?

This. Zod is putting words in Rivera's mouth.

Except he's right. If you think Smitty is still a deep threat then I've got a 2001 Mitsubishi Galant to sell to you.

You think he can't get open against a third cornerback? He was double-teamed all of last season.

I would prefer Rivera and Gman to keep Smitty's name out of their mouths, even if what they say is true.  Best believe this is going to be hanging in his locker.

In addition to mentioning Smith's decline in speed, Rivera also said several times he thinks Smith needs to tone down his approach to practice in order to get through a season healthy.

I remember Rivera praising Smith's intensity in practice...now he needs to change.  Oh lawd.

"Getting open" had nothing to do with anything Rivera said. Speed doesnt equal getting open. If that were the case, Ginn would be a top WR in this league.

Rivera said Smitty's not as fast as he was. Thats obviously true.

And said Smitty's not as durable as he was. Also true

You're right, speed doesn't equal getting open. You have to be a good route runner - which Steve Smith certainly is. If you think Steve Smith can't get a lot more 20+ yard plays as a slot guy against a #3 receiver, you are wrong.

You're arguing a point that NO ONE is making. Theres not a single guy on this forum that thinks Smitty cant get open.

All that was said is he's lost a step and isnt as durable. Both are true. They aren't debatable.

Agreed but the guy can create separation and still has value
