But Keary Colbert really needed that veteran presence. No one remembers he led all rookies in ypc in 2004 when he had Moose holding his hands. Then Moose leaves, Smith comes back and is like "who the fug is this kid?" On his path to one of the greatest receiving seasons ever, Smith made it known he was the top dog and had no interest tutoring Keary. Smith was still young then sure, and hadn't really had his big maturation moment. But he'd do poo like tell Keary to piss off when he and Delhomme were talking, or calling him out in the film room constantly.

Keary melted down.

Long story short then Colbert wasnt strong enough to succeed by himself where others have right? Should Smith have felt any pity when he did it like he did it. . against all the odds? Its miraculous that he even played the career  he's had with all the damage he gives and takes.

Like I said, you hire coaches to develop players. If he needs help from veterans then maybe Jake owed him more and not so much Smitty. How experienced was Jake at the time?  Not very.

You are really underestimating the importance of veterans helping to develop younger players. It us way more important than you think.

Let me tell you a "coolstorybro". My house got broken into. . I found the dude when I showed up. Its 10pm, and I run this fugger down in the street. Im screaming for help but no one is coming. I wrestled this scumbag for 10 minutes until I could free one hand and dial 911, then wait another 10 for them to show up. Only then do neighbors start coming out of their houses.

No ones got your back but yourself.

That article pretty much read like my worst case scenario. I hope he's wrong because of he's not, tagging Hardy was a huge mistake. Bell at LT is the sum of all fears. Godfrey sucked before blowing out his Achilles. Cutting our only proven NFL WR with no big cap savings is completely indefensible as a pure "football move".

Don't mean to be raining on parades here, but like I said, that article was pretty much outlining my worst fears.

You are being short-sighted by only looking at this year's cap as opposed to seeing that his cap-hits would be increasing over the next 3 seasons, rather than decreasing. Cutting him now gives us a 9 million dollar saving in that critical third season. Overall, it saves around 12 million over the three years.

It was smart to go ahead and take the hit rather than be forced to watch diminishing production at a premium price, while also handicapping the development of a younger player with possibly short and long-term effects on overall play calling and QB progression.

It was the only move that could be done which would enable the team to move ahead and potentially progress overall. It was the right move, despite how it played out in the PR department.
