Merril Hoge: Clowney has very poor football skills; Khalil Mack best defensive prospect I've ever seen

We'll find out soon enough.

My take is this- IF he applies himself he can be an elite defender, but his reliance on just his athleticism won't be enough in the NFL and half-assing certainly won't cut it.

He has all the potential in the world, doesn't mean squat if he doesn't take advantage of it.

Like Dee Ford said at the combine, to this point Clowney has just played like a blind dog in a meat shop.

And you're 100% correct, if he applies himself, NFL watch out.

ESPN likes to have ex players as analysis' because its portrayed in most viewers eyes that these guys know their stuff and have this brilliant insight from being in the league.

This always results in idiotic, pot stirring-like comments that heat up meaningless discussion in order to create their own stories.

Remember when Jaws said Kaeperdick could be the best QB of all time? And then ESPN continued to re-air that interview and build stories and topics off of it for he next week? They fabricate their own poo just because. And some people don't even see it, it's crazy.

IQ? Let's end that right now. Football IQ at the D-II level is not on par with D-I. There's a big learning curve for D-II prospects and we see it every year.

If Barr is a bust, then Mack is a mega bust.

At any rate, the irony in your statements is that Mack is viewed as the athletic freak and Barr is viewed as the smarter player.

Buffalo is a Div-I school... in the MAC.

Mack is serious business.  Clowney will take a few years to develop IMO, either way.  Both should and will likely make impacts with their teams but to dismiss Mack because he played in the MAC for Buffalo?  Please.  Urban Meyer said of Mack in the Ohio State game that Mack was the best football player on the field hands down.

I would bet half of those here downing Mack never watched more then 5 minutes of his play and that was on ESPN SportsCenter to begin with.  Mack is a very good LB and could come in and play about any position - Jack, Sam, Will, Mike.  Could he Aaron Curry out?  Sure.  But, Clowney could, too.

Not doubting his abilities by no means. I think he is great. But to say better than Clowney that has 3 years of domination in a major conference.. is a bit wild.

I wish we would draft another linebacker.. some great ones to snag... Barr... Mosely. I would love to use a pick on one of these guys.

First, MAC is a Div-1 conference. Second, I never said Barr is going to be a bust but rather he has the better chance of the two. When I watched Barr he was getting pushed back on run plays and if a play was to the opposite side he tended to give up.

On the other hand, Mack is all over the place and has the type of intangibles that can relate to Kuechly.

I'm just saying Barr is getting hyped up due to his athleticism just like Dion Jordan was last year and that's not to say the two won't be good players one day, I just feel like it will take more coaching and motivation to get these guys up to where everyone thinks they will be.

Now, if Barr gets selected in the middle of the first round, then that's a huge bargain. I just don't feel like he's top-10 worthy.

If you want the biggest impact, go with the highest intangibles at your pick imo or at least someone you can anchor a team around.  All the names up there have the talent.

A lot of analysts think it's Mack which apparently is hard to argue (haven't seen much on him to be honest) but I would personally take Jake Matthews this year at 1.
