He'll have more leverage.  Right now, he has a major incentive to get a long-term deal done because he knows he'll get a lot more money via a long-term deal than by playing out his contract via the team option.  If we utilize the option, then the only way we have of definitely not letting him walk would be to use the franchise tag which is a cap killer for a QB.

 

So basically, you're in agreement with me that this could end in disaster for the Panthers.

That's not guaranteed.

Wouldn't pay him until next season anyway. It's an extension, not a new deal, so this year's amount stays the same whether we pay him today or next off-season.

That's not true when you look at other extensions. Extensions come with bonuses. Jason Peters earned an extension and the prorated amount of the bonus will be applied this season.

Why is FOX Sports saying that it'll be tougher to keep him if we put it off til next year? That's not a rhetorical question. I'm really asking. 

 

Because they want Cam in a big market. So spew some crap and hope in sinks into Cam's head and turns him against DG and the Panthers.
