Draft Discussion

I don't understand what is so hard for people to get that Gettleman is going BPA all the way regardless of position. And that is what he should do. That is how you build championship teams. I trust him to add the 7 best players to roster that he possibly can

so one builds a championship team by ignoring the team's needs in a draft chock full of players that can meet those needs, and instead taking the highest ranked prospect at each pick, regardless of need?

sounds like a grand idea. lets do that. tell me Herbert... when are you going to apply for the GM position of an NFL team?

@RavensInsider: Ravens attended Indiana wide receiver Cody Latimer Pro Day workout. He ran a 4.39 unofficial, had a 39-inch vertical leap

I'm really high on Latimer and was hoping to maybe get him in the 4th. No way he's still available then anymore.

I'd argue Norman is coming I to his make or break year.

I though Thomas showed promise, but much like a young Captain his aggressiveness got the best of him with holding, DPI and biting on double moves and fakes.

If we could land a potential starting quality outside CB in the 4-7 rounds then I'm all for it. I just think need and the talent/depth at WR and OT is too much to ignore in the top 3 rounds.

For the sake of argument, let me make my disclaimer that this is what I would do, not necessarily what DG would/should do.

I think we're fortunate to have the strength of the draft align with our needs for the second year in a row.

i have to restate DB as big need, not just CB. godfrey with his cap and injury, well its still up in the air whats happening. basically wilks has been given 4 street guys, old 5th rounder whos light may never come on, and a former 1st that was lucky someone gave him a contract. wilks made some fine lemonade and chicken salad with that. be great to see what a talented CB/DB could do for the DL, instead of the DL doing for DB.

How I see our needs....

Starters:

WR - Literally Jerricho Cotchery and Tiquan Underwood

OT - No starting LT atm and Byron Bell is very low on the RT rankings

CB - Cason is a one year deal... White, Thomas, Dockery, and Norman aren't exactly lighting it up out there

Rotational/Fringe Starters:

FS - Gettleman is noncommittal on Godfrey and his backup is Colin Jones who is ST only

OG - Silatolu is a lock, but Scott, Williams, Kugbila are all low-end starters at the moment

TE - Brandon Williams is a flop, Mike McNeill is a blocker only

DT - Dwan Edwards is old/in last year of deal, only DT on roster besides Star and Short

Depth:

C - Jeff Byers and Geoff Hangartner retiring leaves practice squadder Brian Folkers as backup...

LB - Blackburn in last year of deal/is old, Klein will step up next year, only Jason Williams left as a backup after that...

Things we definitely don't need to worry about:

QB - Cam is about to get his extension and Derek Anderson is fine

RB - Handcuffed to Double Trouble this year, Tolbert is a beast, Barner deserves some better looks

DE - Two top ten DEs, Addison/Alexander/Horton are solid rotational players

SS - Roman Harper and Robert Lester look like a decent rotation going forward

K/P - Gano and Nortman were one of the best kicking duos last season

nicely done.

i agree with most of this, but not williams being a flop. dc jefferson was a 7th rounder that played some for zona, then he got cut after a DWI. hes in play for me to replace hartsock. those two are young strong prospects.

You are partially correct. My understanding is when teams are building their draft boards position factors into where they rank players to determine BPA. In other words we have Cam so on our draft board we may not have the top rated QB on our draft board until the 4th round.

I think they might actually go with BB at LT believe it or not. If either Jake Mathews, Greg Robinson, Taylor Lewan or Zack Martin drop to 28, I'm pretty sure Gettleman would be doing back flips in the war room. Laugh You're right that MM is a RT but he'll be pretty darn good at RT. He's a powerful run blocker who isn't a complete liability in pass pro. He played LT this past year at UVA but yeah the scouting community doesn't think he can cut it at LT in the NFL.

BB at left tackle is out of my comfort zone. He seemed to lack the foot speed to block edge rushers at RT. Would that not translate to the left side?

if i may ask, which of these do you think the team will address through free agency?

also... do you think its possible that the FO drafts for next year and takes a RB and DE to groom due to possible (probable) cap casualties?

He's got pretty quick feet for a man his size. His issue is his technique which is fixable. His natural position isn't RT but LT. BB is more athletic rather than your traditional mauler. I think they should get his weight down to around 320 which could help him  move better. I know the board makes fun of him saying I'm left handed comment but honestly I think he'll be more comfortable on the left side. It's his natural position but I am nervous about it also. We'll see how the draft goes, maybe he'll have some competition. The PATS game last year he did a pretty darn good job. Cam could build a house in the pocket before throwing in that game
