Draft Discussion

I believe that we should try to have a balance draft. I know that their pressing need on offense however if there is a defensive puck that could add depth we should go after that person as well. For years our draft has attacked on area an neglected the other, this draft should be like our team last year balanced.

my 76 cents,

4 or 5 picks on offensive- 2 OT, 2 WR, maybe 1 TE or 1 OG

2-3 picks on DBs preferred CBs.

0 ST

Go into the draft with the plan of solving 2 out 3 BIG needs ie WR, DB, OL. save alittle extra and spend more for UDFAs than past years, deep draft means some past 5th round graded players will not be drafted. dave did a great job last year with horton, white, and lester. follow the BPA, but do it realist mindset. example if a RB/QB/MLB you have rated as 84 is available and the other choice is a 81 rated WR/CB/OT, take the "lower" rated player this year. drop that starting 5th round, if a 2nd round rated RB/MLB/DT/DE take the guy.

maybe its not, i mean im a fan of the group even the 5th/6th listed guys. it would be nice to add a #1 type of CB in rounds 1-4, then focus on WR/OT at the other picks. talent is there, even in late rounds. mainly its been VERY unfair to give steve wilks the type of talent to work with.

josh thomas- late 5th rounder wavied by dallas. lost his starting job last yr.

josh norman- make or break season, inactive for most games last year

cason- did nothing last year, could be reborn here then sign for big bucks else where

white- lucky to have him, best current CB

other two have some talent- drafted in the 5th, other is former QB who could turn heads and fight for a spot.

cason, thomas, and norman are also on 1 one years deals. need a long term #1/2 solution.

I'd argue Norman is coming I to his make or break year.

I though Thomas showed promise, but much like a young Captain his aggressiveness got the best of him with holding, DPI and biting on double moves and fakes.

If we could land a potential starting quality outside CB in the 4-7 rounds then I'm all for it. I just think need and the talent/depth at WR and OT is too much to ignore in the top 3 rounds.

For the sake of argument, let me make my disclaimer that this is what I would do, not necessarily what DG would/should do.

I think we're fortunate to have the strength of the draft align with our needs for the second year in a row.

If we can grab 3 O-players, whether that be 2 WRs and an OT, or 2 OTs and WR, in the first 3 picks, I'd like them to at least give serious thought to drafting a CB, someone like Phillip Gaines would be great in the later rounds(although I've seen a lot of talking being a 2nd day pick, which would blow), give Wilks someone to really mold at the position.

I could see an OLB and a DE selected as well at some point.

I think it goes something like this:

1st- WR

2nd- OT

3rd- OT

4th- WR

5th-CB

6th-S/DE/TE

7th- G/S/DE/TE/OLB

We will pick a OT in the 1st and not a WR.

2nd- WR

3rd-WR

4th- O-line

5th- CB

6th-DL

7th-CB/S

Just they way this offseason has gone. There has not been anything to get excited about and taking an 0-lineman in the 1st would be the perfect ending to a difficult offseason.

I don't mind if a guy is there, but I don't see it. Off seasons don't have to be exciting or sexy to be effective.

OT is a bigger need and if we wait until the 2rd round there won't be any T's left than can start from day 1.

Agree T is the bigger need, but you can't reach for need and DG says he refuses to do it. Really disagree that immediate starters only come out of the first round.

There are several very promising OT's with second and later grades.

With the cap mess Gman is dealing with, trading down in a draft crazy deep in WR/OT, their needs at this point, is almost a given.  Rookie contracts are cheaper after the 1st round.  I see Gman trading down into early 2nd round, picking up an extra 3rd and doubling up on OT/WR.
