I think it's so people know you're not in a use it or lose it situation.

 

ok..  my confusion has been answered.  

 

 

it's to help slow people understand basic principles defined by "mathematics"..  for instance, lets say the cap is 128 this year and next year it's 128.. Naturally the cap space doesn't vanish in thin air..

 

 

people have been using this like it's some new concept...

Not exactly, if the cap was 128 last year but you only use 125, you get that extra 3 added to your available space this year. So if the league cap is 130 you can add the additional 3 that rolled over for a total cap of 133.

Well, it was new in the new CBA agreement. So its only several seasons into practice.

Previously something similar was done with creative contract structuring.

right...  

 

so this makes cutting Godfrey even more beneficial this year, but I have to assume the coaches actually plan on using him at FS this upcoming season or else the 3.7mil or so in dead money next year wouldn't be an issue since the 5.5mil we gain this year could roll over and net us 1.8mil next year...  assuming I remembered those numbers exactly.
