...OK, not waves, but definitely ripples that could make for the beginning of a solid team.

 

 

Just take a pause and consider the bigger picture.  It not about waves, per se, but it's about  lots of little ripples connecting together to form the bigger picture.

 

Last week this time, many people thought that we were dead in the water.  This week, some people are still saying that we are taking a step backwards, but I believe that's because they aren't seeing the bigger picture.  The fact is, like Dave Gettleman has always said, we are cap-challenged.  I suppose people didn't believe him, but when put within the context of paying Greg Hardy millions the reality couldn't be overlooked.  Add in Graham Gano, and we just couldn't re-sign Mike Mitchell, Ted Ginn Jr., and Captain Munnerlyn market prices.  

 

Now we could have possibly worked out something with Brandon LaFell, but I don't necessarily feel that he was a priority (or should have been), plus he was itching to get to New England. Well, while Pantherland was in an uproar over the release of Smitty, the signing of Roman Harper was basically ignored. And as the Smith debacle settled down, the Panthers signed Jerricho Cotchery. Now Cotchery and Harper may not scream excitement or improvement, my belief is that even as short-term stop-gaps Cotchery and especially Harper should be in the same neighborhood production-wise and quality-wise as compared to Mitchell and Lafell.  We couldn't afford the younger players, so we went for older guys who should be able to get the job done for a year or two when you look at what they have done in their careers.  I have no doubt that Harper can play to Mitchell's level, and if we're lucky---and get better play calling---then Cotchery, Marvin McNutt or Tavarres King will be what LaFell never was as a Panther.

 

Moreover, Tiquan Underwood should at least be able to match Ginn's receiving production, particularly if you look at career averages.  Underwood is fast, but he is a bigger, arguably more athletic target (which is something we need).  It is very realistic to believe that if given the same opportunity out on the field as Ginn, then perhaps Underwood will even be better (at a more affordable price).

 

One player that should clearly be better than his predecessor is Antoine Cason.  Cason was buried on the bench last year, but there is at least a little reason to believe that a reunion with Rivera will bare good fruit. And, of course, there is also reason to believe that this draft is going to bare some good fruit as well. When you look at G-man's first draft, he did pretty well. With this draft being deep at WR and OT, there is EVERY reason to believe that we will get someone to replace the guys that we lost. Of course there will be bumps and bruises due to lack of experience, but don't be surprised if by the end of the year that we don't have a receiver that eclipses the production of Steve Smith last year, and a tackle or two that will bolster our line for the next decade.

 

Things may not be as great as we would like, but neither are they as dire as they appear. One thing though, it's still early in the game that is the off-season.  If last off-season didn't make you a believer, at least it should make believing easier.  Think about the potential of the ripples.

What I find funny is people thinking our starting tackles and wrs are going to come from the draft and take zero time to develop.

 

At this oint I think it's clear Gettle is banking on our RBs pulling their weight in $ which is pretty impossible unless we live 2008 again.
