Has this week calmed your Gettle-fears?

Roman Harper is done. Has been done for a couple seasons getting beat deep. If he starts we are in trouble. Cason is also known for getting beat deep a lot. Harpers is a downgrade to the loss of Mitchell and Cason is a push with Captain gone. Small downgrade to an already horrible secondary.

The only receiver of note is Jerricho Cotchery who has lost more steps than Steve Smith and would have been challenging Hixon for the 4th spot last season. Cotchery's stats for TDs last season were a product of the Steelers system - just like Steve Smith's decline in numbers were a product of Mike Shula's system. We have lost an all pro receiver in Smith who made several clutch catches to pull out wins last season, and deep threat speed in Ginn with the ability to change field position on special teams. We have no one to rely on for kick or punt returns now. We no longer have a clutch receiver on 3rd down. We have no deep threat speed. We lose 2 to 3 more games and we never sniff the playoffs without Steve Smith and Ted Ginn last season easy - even with our defense. Huge downgrade and we were sub par with receivers last season.

Offensive line which was average last season is a downgrade for obvious reasons.

Special teams is a downgrade. See loss of Ginn with no suitable replacement.

The offseason is not done, but as of right now we are trailing everyone in the NFC South. Gettleman has downgraded offense, defense, and special teams. This team was in the position of playoff contention and has now dropped back to mediocre. Only thing keeping the Panthers out of the cellar is their defensive front seven. Gettleman will need a miracle draft to turn everything around. He will need to find 2 starting receivers (one clutch on 3rd down), a consistent return man, a pro bowl offensive lineman, a starting caliber safety, and 2 starting caliber CBs to make this team a solid playoff contender. That is 7 needs from the draft. You will not find them in the bargain basement of free agency once the first week has passed. If Gettleman can manage the 3 offensive needs and a return man in the draft the Panthers will have an outside shot at the playoffs.

So, let us hope for a miracle draft. Anyone who has followed the NFL for a while knows the start to a season is essential for a shot at the playoffs, and the first 3 weeks of free agency as well as the draft lay the foundation for the start of the season. The Panthers foundation has many more cracks in it now compared to last offseason.

It will be a long road through the offseason for the Panthers.

Why, thanks for the optimistic assessment.   :stuff:

The secondary was far from terrible last year.

people forget what Ginn was before he came to us... which is why I'm actually really excited about Underwood.

I see a pattern in the type of players Gettleman is grabbing, and I really like where he is going.

What a lot of people aren't seeing here is that this is a team being built to win long-term... the GM isn't going to destroy our future to try to win next year, he's going to field a team that can win year in, year out.  That means you develop an elite core of players and fill in roleplayers around them.  He's doing just that.

side note.  All forums should allow members to tag other relevant members and go to "read only people I respect mode" on occasion.  Or always.

but that's just me.

I think are on point with your perspective of what Gettleman is attempting to do and on why his approach is not only intelligent but sustainable long-term.

Steve Smith is 35 years old. It is unbelievable to me that people are trying to blame his decline in productivity entirely on our offensive scheme.

I'm one blaming the Shula system, but not exclusively. It was a mix of things. Age is indeed catching up to him and you could see the drop off in his explosiveness, which is huge for a guy his size. On the flip side, the offense was much more run oriented and there were less opportunities.

let's get this straight DG played a small role in us going 12-4, he did put some quality guys on the team that played big roles, and clear some much needed cap space but that's about it, that's taking away credit from coaches and players. Not a hater but you gotta wait till the season to asset DG, not every player is going to end up like Ginn or Mitchell

Takes time to give a fair evaluation of a GM. Certainly more than a season and a quarter of an off season. The job is a complicated mix of financial responsibility, talent evaluation, long range vision and personnel management. I'm very encouraged with him to date.
