Derrick Burgess For Sale

Get the deal to be for a 4th and a decent contract, and this would be a great move.

The cap implications scare me a bit, but adding talented pass rushers is always a good idea.

A big body in the middle is more needed, but take the opportunities when they arrive.

Agreed.

Burgess was fighting injuries last year plus he played in Oakland. There are a lot of players who lose hope and quit on that team. Ask New England. Put him on this team, and he's instantly our 2nd best defensive lineman. All that would be missing is a DT in free agency or next years draft. I'm surprised more people arent open to this, IF it's at all possible, cap-wise.

I really hope this is sarcasm....if not then I am disappointed.

No, not really sarcasm. I am not saying that he is not a solid player. However, with the lack of depth at DT and OL that we have, there is no way I would invest the money in another DE. We have Peppers, Brayton, Johnson, and Brown. The money needs to be spent elsewhere....if it is even available.

Just because Indy had small DTs and DEs doesn't exactly mean that will translate to the same philosophy in Carolina.

That was a different system setup based on a powerful offense who didn't require a strong run stopping D due to their offfense scoring so often and opponets playing catchup. Now that isn't exactly the case, but more so than requiring big DTs to stop the run.

This is a different FO so I wouldn't expect small DTs to be "what Meeks likes so that's what we'll have here". Not saying it's not possible, but those are 2 different teams. I wouldn't try to label them the same circumstances.

After an offseason worth of rumors indicating a deal might happen, the Patriots acquired Derrick Burgess from the Raiders Thursday. (In a sign of the times, they announced it via their Twitter feed.)

New England will give up "undisclosed draft considerations" in the move. Oakland was believed to be looking for two mid-round picks in the deal, but it's unclear if they got them.

Burgess is expected to convert to outside linebacker in New England, where the team is in need of a pass rusher.

UPDATE: Michael Lombardi reports that the Patriots gave up their third and fifth round picks in 2011 in the deal. Adam Schefter points out the Eagles were offering a third-round pick and a player.

PFT

The Pats snap him up.
