Antoine Cason a Panther- One Year Deal per League Source

Recommended Posts

We've seen this script already and it's worked very well: scheme your defense to fit your players abilities. There is something really special about how the Riviera/McDermott/Wilks coaching is impacting the quality of what we see on the field. I'm thinking Cason will fit right in. Familiarity and hunger to cash in on another contract both add to the chances of this being a shot in the arm.

Here's another controversal claim that won't be welcomed on this board..

Godfrey balls out at FS.

He played exceptional at FS at the end of the 2012 season, and that was without Mosterz Inc. Bank it.

I've been saying that since before the season ended. I just hope he has a full recovery so he can do just that.

this is from a Chargers blog:

"Should the San Diego Chargers Re-Sign Antoine Cason?

Feb 19 2013

Antoine Cason is a free agent and the San Diego Chargers' secondary needs bodies. Should the team re-sign him?

...

In 2011, hopes were high for Antoine. Many Chargers fans thought that he could be a top 10 CB. Instead, Cason seemed to struggle with maintaining focus and was bullied by physical receivers. He ended the season as the 61st best Cornerback in the league, which still made his season better than Quentin Jammer's (103rd). Let me remind you that there are 32 teams in the NFL, meaning that there are 64 starting Cornerbacks in the league.

2012 was a make-or-break year. Would Cason return to his 2010 form in a contract year, demanding top-dollar and taking over the #1 CB spot on the roster from Jammer?

Not exactly. Jammer and Cason finished the reason as the 107th and 108th best Cornerbacks in the league, respectively.

...

COST

...The last time the Chargers let a mediocre #2 CB leave (Drayton Florence) he was given $5 million a year to be a Buffalo Bill, so it's not a stretch to think that Cason could get between $3-5 million.

...

I always felt like the team didn't get nearly enough value out of Cason. I'm not sure if it was his fault or Jammer's, but I hated the system where Cason plays on the right side and Jammer plays on the left side.

It made it too easy for teams to line up their physical receivers (who Cason struggles against and Jammer does well against) on Cason and their fast receivers (who Jammer struggles against and Cason does well against) on Jammer.

...

In the end, I think the Chargers could get similar value from an inexpensive rookie CB than they could from re-signing Antoine Cason."

(Cason ended up being signed by the Cards for 1 year, didn't start a single game, and now he is a Panther)

So happy about this signing, just became my favorite Panther seeing as he was already one of my favorite non Panthers.

I was in school at Arizona for the same 4 years that he was playing there, he's directly responsible for a few of my most favorite sports moments in my life, I am honestly on cloud freaking 9 with this signing.

Now I just need to get some good autographs or something of his, I'd kill for the chance to buy some sort of game used jersey/gloves/shoes/etc. of his from this upcoming season for my memorabilia collection

so so so so happy

Bear Down and Keep Pounding Antoine!!!!

Can I reserve him for the 2014 Adopt a Panther?  lol

everyone is rly excited about signing a guy who played his way to the bench last year.

He did play opposite Patrick Peterson last year

well it looks like he played in all games

Cason played all games on special teams only. on defense, Cason rarely saw the field. He and Javier Arenas battled back and forth as the #4 and #5 CBs. The #4 CB only saw the field in dime packages (6 defensive backs). Their #1 CB was Patrick Peterson, their #2 CB was Jerraud Powers and their #3 CB was Tyrann Mathieu, who would slide in as nickel corner in nickel packages (he played FS in their base package). When Mathieu tore his ACL vs the Rams late in the season, Cason and Arenas battled to replace him as the nickel corner the last four games of the season. All of that is from reading the weekly postgame reviews on a Cardinals blog that reviewed what position everybody played and how many snaps

here were the total defensive snaps by Arizona DBs last year (snaps on special teams in parentheses)

1016 - CB Patrick Peterson (146 on ST)

1011 - S Yeremiah Bell (157 on ST)

978 - CB Jerraud Powers (69 on ST)

624 - CB/S Tyrann Mathieu (95 on ST)

561 - S Rashad Johnson (121 on ST)

198 - S Tony Jefferson (193 on ST)

153 - CB Antoine Cason (171 on ST)

98 - CB Javier Arenas (232 on ST)

0 - CB Justin Bethel (298 on ST)

and here were Cason's snaps per game on defense last year:

5 of 67 - Rams

0 of 58 - Lions

0 of 75 - Saints

? of ?? - Bucs

10 of 68 - Panthers

8 of 70 - 49ers

5 of 67 - Seahawks

0 of 83 - Falcons

0 of 68 - Texans

0 of 61 - Jags

? of ?? - Colts

0 of 78 - Eagles

21 of 54 - Rams (Tyrann Mathieu tears ACL)

69 of 86 - Titans

34 of 52 - Seahawks

11 of 59 - 49ers

NBC Sports:

"Panthers agree to one-year deal with Antoine Cason. Less-generous types might refer to it as dumpster-diving. But the Panthers continue to poke around for second-wave free agent bargains...(Cason) barely played for the Cardinals last year."
