Why has Hardy not be signed to a long term contract?

Two 2nd's for Hardy is tempting..

.. Its just that hardy has the potential to explode into the best DE in the league. Hes 25?

A good pash rush is extremly benificial to a defense. Covers the asses of the positions that woukd be lacking otherwise. Some around here truly undervalue the importance of a very good DEs, which is worth the money to have them. CERTAINLY better to be paying two really good DEs than two RBs that arent even used correctly. The positional values of the two shouldnt even be mentioned in the same conversation.

Hardy probably wants that $13m this year rather than only 8 or 9 which is what we would probably offer in the first year for a long term.  You won't find any actual answers here, if that is what you are looking for, just speculation.

The 8 or 9 would be the cap amount.  He would likely receive around 20-25 million in a signing bonus which is paid right away so he would much prefer a long term deal versus a one year tag.  Still 13 million is about 11 million more than he got last year and he could still break the bank next year with the cap going up.  Hardy believes he is just going to get better not worse. I hope he is right.

Yea I see where you are coming from .

I am not sure that a 13 million opportunity cost is worth it given our needs at LT, DB, and WR  is worth it  for one year of service but that is well above my pay grade.

I have the same concern.  It was a tough call and how he handles it continues to be an issue.  The reasons I think he is on a one-year deal are petty--He tagged him early (suggests a deal was not close) and we would like to see a bit more of his work before paying him.

I think this tells us a lot about Frank Alexander--had he developed like we hoped, we would have us a stud LT right now, and probably a bigger name WR than Cotchery.

You know, with our defense, WR is probably not as important as we think it is.  To me, and I could be wrong, the OL has to be the first priority.

I agree that a strong Oline is more important than the WR position but with 4 of 5 of last years opening day starters signed for next season I don't know if our oline is really as bad off as we think. Sure we need to upgrade our tackles but there is still plenty of time to do that via the draft or picking up summer cuts from other teams. I suppose you could say that about WR as well except for the having last years starters signed part.

Hardy made All Pro, not CJ. Compensatory picks start at the end of the 3rd, not getting a second.

If I'm going to tie that much money up, it's going to be in the younger guy. I love CJ, but if it comes down to one or the other Hardy is the one I keep.

The ONLY reason CJ did not have a Pro Bowl season is that he got hurt.  CJ is our most consistent D-lineman, and (if you're being honest) it's not even close.  If it comes down to keeping one or the other, CJ is my guy.

It's obviously up to him wether he signs or not. If he chooses not to it'll just be because he doesn't wanna give up the mula &/ hasn't made the decision he'd like to stay here long term just yet. I can honestly say at this point w/ all things considered i wouldn't have signed it yet either

Yep. CJ had more sacks than Hardy before he got injured.

He signed his one yr deal.

It would not surprise me that Gman has left him out in the cold since then to let him bust his agents chops about why no long term deal is on the table.  Seems like Gman has done this kind of thing before and lets guys leave town and come back, etc.  Leverage seems not to be a problem with Gman.

Let D Rosenhaus put his clients future in jeopardy with only a one year deal and see how many more clients he gets if Hardy gets injured
