I get the impression that gettleman prefers to sign two year deals with most of these guys so we don't have to go through this whole process over and over every year. Nicks probably didn't want anything more than one year at a lowered rate. cotchery and Harper have both been willing to sign for more than one year.

I don't think it's as simple as gettleman saw smitty as a distraction and decided to cut him. It was a combination of age, production, contract and the "distraction" part of it as well. For example, Gettleman would not be releasing a 27 year old smitty because he is a "distraction" 

 

I agree 100%. Please remember that  I said "IF it is true...". 

 

All you really have to do is look at the contract beyond 2014 and see how it escalated as he aged to realize this was a necessary move.  The fact that he did not ask him to take a cut (I think--who knows the real truth?) or discuss other similar options is curious.  We really do not know what was going on behind closed doors.  I can see that Smitty would be a difficult teammate to have.  We loved him, but we didn't have to work with him every day.

Britt, Jackson--the fact that these 2 very talented guys were/are not wanted by their teams speaks volumes.  IF it is true that Gettlemen thought Smitty was a distraction and cut him, I do not see him bringing in one of these gems.  Nor do I see us surrendering a 3rd rounder to get him.
