Panthers positional spending (Bill Voth)

Recommended Posts

http://billvoth.com/panthers-positional-spending/

The Panthers are currently allocating 23% of their adjusted cap space toward defensive ends. The league average is 9.45%. The $31.8 million Carolina has committed to its defensive ends is the most of any position for any team. Only four other teams even break $20 million: Arizona ($20.5), Buffalo ($26.7), Jacksonville ($25.6) and St. Louis ($24.0).

The Panthers are currently allocating 8.4% of their adjusted cap space toward running backs. The league average is 4.95%. Only four teams have committed more to their running backs than Carolina ($11.1): (Buffalo $12.4), Minnesota ($15.8), Philadelphia ($13.4) and Tennessee ($13.8).

The Panthers are currently allocating 2% of their adjusted cap space toward wide receivers, the smallest amount of any team. The league average is 9.65%.

The Panthers are currently allocating .4% of their adjusted cap space toward left tackles, the smallest amount of any team. The league average is 4.36%.

DE- We're the only team with two top 5 guys.

Rams have Quinn and Long. Long's sack totals over last four seasons: 8.5, 11.5, 13.0, 8.5. Quinn had 19.0 last season, 10.5 the year before. Quinn is still on his rookie contract. ESPN wrote this on Jan 21, 2014 comparing the Rams to Panthers:

"Quinn is not only one of the league's most dominant defenders but also one of its biggest bargains. ...

Quinn's cap hit for 2014 is scheduled to be slightly more than $3 million, meaning he'll once again be a bargain. But sooner rather than later, the Rams are going to have to pay up for their best player.

While Quinn's combination of youth and ability should terrify other teams around the league, it also could provide scary thoughts for the Rams as they head toward what will almost certainly be a bank-breaking contract extension.

...

What happens with the Carolina Panthers in a similar situation this offseason could be instructive for the Rams. The Panthers signed end Charles Johnson to a six-year, $72 million deal in 2011 but now have Greg Hardy about to hit free agency. That should sound familiar to the Rams in that Carolina has the lesser (though still very good) player signed to a big deal but now needs to pay the elite one."

Long/Quinn are no where near as good against the run.

There more to bring z defensive end than bull rushing the QB.

This is why I don't think Hardy will be signed to a long term contract.

The Panthers are currently allocating 8.4% of their adjusted cap space toward running backs.

This won't last either.

The Panthers are currently allocating 2% of their adjusted cap space toward wide receivers, the smallest amount of any team.

No surprise here. The cupboard is pretty much bare right now. That 2% will go up a lot before the season starts.

The Panthers are currently allocating .4% of their adjusted cap space toward left tackles, the smallest amount of any team.

Same situation as the WR's. LT and WR stats are meaningless right now, and RB and DE percentages will go down over time.

I think it's possible this is Hardy's last season with the Panthers, unless he has an absolute monster year next year. This is what Gettleman said on franchise tagging Hardy:

“The franchise mechanism gives us time to secure the services of a very good player while we continue to look at the future of Greg with the Carolina Panthers”

NBC Sports suggested we trade Hardy for some good draft picks, writing:

"With Charles Johnson set to count more than $16 million against the cap, and Hardy hitting a one-year charge of around $13 million, the Panthers will have more than a fifth of this year’s cap tied up in a pair of players, neither of whom throw passes.... They chew up a huge portion of the Panthers salary cap...That creates a bit of a bind for the Panthers moving forward, as they still have 18 unrestricted free agents set to hit the market on March 11."

Dang, Voth calling Hardy the elite one out of the group. Truth

We gotta lock the Kracken up and do what we can to decrease CJs cap number. Getting rid of Hardy puts our weakness out front and center and will fully expose our weak secondary. Even if we had an elite secondary, which we have no way of getting one even if we didn't have Hardy's contract, a secondary is not as effective as an elite pass rush...as we witnessed last season. I wish you detractors of Hardy would let this sink in...

I think we can get away with allocating the money between these two for the next couple of seasons because all our receivers will be on rookie contracts. Once we find that upper-echelon WR, we are gonna have to pay him eventually.

Getting DLo and Stewart off the books is gonna make a huge difference because RBs can be found on the cheap nowadays.

Cam and Hardy are our biggest assets. No way we let either of them go without serious compensation in return. Anyone who says different is deluded and needs to rethink their priorities.

We know that we can get away with using rookies and vet-minimum defensive backs with our current front 7. No need to go away from what works. Star and Kuechly will demand big contracts and getting our running backs off the books will help open up that money.

CJ's contract is utterly ridiculous and the single reason why Hardy isn't locked up to a long deal. CJ is still in his prime but will start the downward turn in a couple years. Hardy will remain elite for the next 5 or 6 seasons and it wold be utterly stupid to let Hardy go befo we tried trading CJ first.

Right now we have CJ, Hardy, Kalil, Olsen, Williams, Stewart and Godfrey on big contracts.

Three years from now I'd like to see Hardy, Cam, Star, Luke, an OT and a WR with those big contracts instead. And with rookies under contract including a replacement DE for CJ, a replacement OLB for TD, and a replacement TE for Olsen playing under rookie contracts that will be up for big contracts within the next couple of years.

I left Kalil off because I feel he, ultimately, Will have to be replaced because of his inflated contract and we'll need that money for Cam and a LT.

Not surprising when all our WRs and LTs are gone and we have yet to replace them. Of course our allocation is lower.

where's the money going to come from? we have no cap space. the allocation will still be low comparitively because most if our cap is gone and used up on DEs an RBs and players who aren't here anymore.

We have around $10M  right now pending Steve Smith June 1 designation and Godfrey would get us to around $15M. Add in a Hardy fix and we go higher.

We may still be lower but a bunch of our cap will hopefully go to WR and line

    • We can't afford to reach for one of the first round QBs this year. I would love for nothing more than Bryce to be the reason we don't even scout the bastards
