I may stand completely alone on this...

...but I'll ask anyway.

Does anyone else feel like the NFL would be better overall if the Raiders were a powerhouse again, rather than a laughingstock?

In the glory days, the Raiders were the biggest villains in the NFL. Sports drama, like a good action movie, works better when you have a strong villain that everyone can hate. If the bad guy is a doormat, there's no drama to it.

I don't think the Raiders can be the villains and a powerhouse at the same

The last time the Raiders were successful under Gruden/Callahan in the 01-02 season, I didn't think they had that "Villain" image. Rich Gannon & Jerry Rice West Coast Offense, Nah. Even though they were winning it didn't feel like "Raider Football"

Although today this season if the Raiders are successful (longshot would be an understatement) I would definitely consider them Villains, With AL obviously calling most of the shots, an obscure HC. Raiders being the laughingstock on Draft Day, thats "Raider Football" AL Davis going against the grain doing what he wants.

But I don't think it would matter to the NFL at all. Allthough with all the lawsuites AL has brought to the League, the NFL probably enjoys the Raiders right were they are.

    • Just had Thanksgiving meal with a couple dozen family and friends. I lucked out and got one of the smoked turkey legs. Stuffing, mashed taters and gravy, green bean casserole, sweet potato casserole, kale, smoked ham, chicken and rice, corn, lima beans, cranberry sauce, and great people. My brother got his guitar out and we got to singing. Lots of actual conversations with people I hardly  ever get to see, haven't seen in a while, or who I never met before. Just a great moment to remember.
    • 3-8 would be a higher win percentage than 3-9
    • Same... With the personnel the Niners had, that defense could have been historically good in the right hands. Under Wilks they were certainly good, they didn't quite rise to that level. Honestly, I see Wilks kinda like I see Rivera: fantastic person, decent head coach. Skill wise, phenomenal DB coach, so-so DC. His greatest strength is his leadership. Hard to find many better in that department. In the Xs and Os / execution area though, not as good. Bottom Line: Wilks is the sort of coach that needs a staff that excels in those aspects of the game where he's weaker. But, like Rivera, I don't know that he scouts assistants very well. That as much as anything might be why he's not in the NFL now.
