Drafted, undrafted, I understand your point. Fact is, there is little to nothing to go on them in regards to the NFL. We're stuck basically watching their college highlights just like we are the potential draft prospects for the upcoming draft in May. We need some veteran talent in here.

Here's McNutt against an NFL cornerback in college, Alfonzo Dennard. If you haven't already seen it.

And yes I know he was a QB his first season and yes I know he was raw coming out. I know he had great numbers his final season.

Our GM is doing this building thing backwards. You don't take options away from a young QB developing into a star. You're kind of supposed to give him MORE options.

Do you think our GM is building?  He is cutting and pasting, trying to get out of the crap Marty Hurney left us with.

How do you know that Smitty was not taken away so Cam could develop?  That is the general vibe about the Smith decision.  The rest?  The offense was 29th last year--taking away in March is probably a solid step 1, if you think about it.

And this is the other way I've been trying to look at it. Because I know there were times during the season I felt Cam forced the ball to Smitty. Maybe this was Smitty demanding the ball and Cam not wanting to have to hear about it on the sideline. I felt Cam was at his best when he was spreading the ball around.

I just wish they would've had brought back Ginn if they were cutting Smith. Give Cam someone that he's a little familiar with.

However you can only do so much with so little. You don't need to give Cam guys like Megatron and AJ Green to have a great year, but they need to find guys somewhere in between the great WR's and the King and McNutt's of the league.

This is from the Jonathon Jones 3 part Q&A with Gettleman back in whenever

Q. What’s your philosophy on potential No. 1 receivers? They can be found in the draft or free agency, so what do you tend to lean toward?

A. The draft history will tell you that it’s a tough position to make an immediate impact. In general, the 20-hour rule has really affected the player that we get. Back in the day, and I know you young guys are tired of hearing that, but when there basically were no rules, these kids for the most part came fundamentally sound. And that’s not happening now.

There was a wide receiver that got taken in the first round a few years back, he ran three routes in college. And didn’t adjust to coverage. He ran to three spots. So just think about what you have to teach that guy. So that’s kind of the thing that, depending upon where he went, he was in the spread offense. Another receiver who was taken in the first round that year, a different college, spread offense, he ran the whole route tree. It depends upon what program the kid came out of.

I don’t know if wide receiver has had a tougher time, but history will tell you the adjustment isn’t easy. (Houston’s DeAndre) Hopkins and (San Diego’s) Keenan Allen had quality rookie years. You have to go through the full process, and part of that full process is spending time with these kids, finding out what they know, what they don’t know. I thought last year that our coaching and scouting staff did a great job post-combine in that part of the process.

And as you know, you’re allowed to bring 30 kids in. You’re going to have 3-4 slots open. If there’s a late guy … they’ll spend a day with us and they’ll be on the board, they’ll spend time with Ron (Rivera) and coaches.

Because the way the league is, the quicker you get your young kids to play, the better you’re going to be. So we’ve got to figure out how quickly this guy’s going to be able to play.

Even on NFL network, they failed to take in all aspects of the Smitty picture.  His contract was back-loaded WAY too much for a guy over 35 years old.   He is an abrasive personality.  Heck, if it was true, telling Cam to ignore the OC at times is inexcusable.  He is on the down side of his career, and I really think they want to develop the young talent they have.   They want Cam to develop chemistry with WRs who are going to grow with him.

I wanted Ginn back too, but I would have offered about half of what he got.  We will sign a vet or two and draft a rookie or two and everyone will be pumped because we will be better .

Smitty had 745 yards last season.  I think they wanted to overhaul the WR corps.  For whatever reason, they did not want Smitty to be a part of it.  Remember, Gettlemen was considered GREAT at finding talent on other team's rosters.  He brought in McNutt and King--they only represent the bottom of the spectrum because they have not had an opportunity to see the field..  They were drafted late by teams with a lot of WRs.  They both needed development and became expendable when numbers were crunched and final rosters were set.  Gettlemen knew this and grabbed them.  They were developing here last season---no OTAs, no camp, no preseason in Panther's uniforms, so everyone assumes they suck because they played little.

Apparently, someone on the roster is ready to play.  "The young guys need to get on the field...."

Last year, you might have said the same thing about Mitchell.

Can you read? He brought it up cuz the other poster said since they didn't play much, they aren't good. He brought up Cruz as an example to show that might not be the case.

That is not the same as saying he is (next)Cruz.

They aren't good right now.  Can they improve?  Sure, and I said as much, but it's foolish to think they're going to reach Cruz's level of production, whereas I actually referenced a point I think they could reach and contribute that would be similar to the production we got last year.  But some of us wanted an offense that was going to actually be improved on paper, not worse on paper and counting on unproven guys to step up.

I think we still have a good chance of going in with a better WR group on paper, so I'm not freaking out yet, but if Gettlemans' grand plan is to ignore WR entirely and plan on McNutt and King stepping up because he knows WR talent so well, I'm worried for the team.

I must be reading a completely different post then. I disagree. Moving on.....

I may not have agreed with every move Gettleman has made so far, but frankly I find it hard to believe that he would enter the season with little more than a few rookies, and the hope that McNutt, and or King could elevate themselves to the level of Cruz without any veterans.

THIS is what I was saying.

THIS is what I was saying.

I think McNutt and King are intended to be the bottom of the 5-6 WR corps, but I also think he sees potential in them. Free Fua posted an interview with Gettlemen where he discusses the unliklihood of a rookie to be ready to become a #1 because of the "20 hour rule".  It seems to me that he would look for some players who were too raw to help a team immediately so they were discarded.

If we add a Cotchery, draft (Cooks/Beckham/Matthews) and Abbrederis, for example, are we better?  Yes. I do not see how they won't be.  I also think having to play.will help them mature quickly.  How much would that cost us in cap room compared to other teams?  I am speculating that our WR corps as a group would cost us a few dollars more than what we would have paid Smith.

Not the ideal scenario, but we need the most talent for the lowest amount of money.  Using the players on a first contract makes sense.

Considering one of them is years younger and was in a horribly designed offense...

If it was so horrible....why did most guys in the pass game have one of the best seasons of their careers?

It needs a legit 1.....the "1" was the only one who can't claim that was one of his best

Run game is a talent issue. Nothing more
