How did we miss this little gem from Scott Fowler? / Top Dawg: Admit G-man fuged up so that we can move on

That's a totally simplistic way of looking at the article. Any long time Panthers fan doesn't even require evidence. Deep down in our hearts we already know it.  Sure, Smitty isn't what he once was, but it's far from the time to kick him into a hole and throw dirt on him.  You should be able to glean this from our less than stellar offensive play calling, our (now ex) less than stellar receiving corp, Steve Smith's modest production within the context, and, frankly, the interest given Steve Smith from the Ravens, Patriots and the Seahawks.

But, hey, if you can't see it, then what more can I tell you?

I posted this in another cry about Steve thread but here are facts about Steve's receiving ability last year.

Smith had the fewest 20+ yard receptions by anyone within the top 65 with 4 of those catches.  Pretty bad for instance, Olsen quadrupled Smith number with 12.  Old man Greg Jennings 11.  Mr Dumpoff Eldemen 9.  Lazy Hakeem Nicks 14.

Ranked 168 in yard per catch average, and ranked 130 in YAC.  The only thing that saved him from looking worse is the sheer amounts of targets.

You definitely cant blame a 130 YAC ranking on Shula.  Maybe you can say it would be 100 if it wasnt for Shula.  But YAC is a direct indication of the receiver

I actually require evidence for most things.  Its how we discern reality from fiction.

PS.  I hate when people use the you know it in your heart line.  Heart doesnt have knowledge only the brain does.  Thats just a way of saying dont think about it

And, yet, there you go again, missing the point, which is that Steve Smith is going to be a legit slot receiver when he has threats on both sides of him. Can he help it if a historical dimwit bordering on a total failure was not putting Steve in the best position to maximize his talents, or that the FO refused to get him some help so that he could maximize whatever he has left in the tank?  Yeah, his drop off was all about age and talent that disappeared overnight. Do you expect me to believe that?  Never mind the fact that he had a decent year in not only 2011 and 2012, with a different OC.  Never mind the fact that people were saying the same poo back in 2010 when there was also a radical change in offense (just like last season).

All of your stats are just that: cherry-picked stats from a year when he was misused by a questionable and unimaginative OC, in an environment with a new GM with seemingly new ideas as to Smith's value based upon inefficient and incorrect use.  Unfortunately I can't provide you future stats, but excuse me for being a victim of the same fiction apparently shared by the FOs of the Ravens, the Patriots and the Seahawks (among others),

After several days of reading people's post and reading the local reporter's offerings it appears that the general feeling is that the Panthers and Dave Gettelman in particular have screwed up by releasing Steve Smith. I felt the same way for a while but have changed my mind. I know it will be hard to replace Steve Smith in the locer room and in the huddle but I believe that is what the Panthers are looking to do. Everybody knows that Steve Smith is almost 35 yrs old and that is old for an NFL player and really old for a WR. On the other hand they have a QB that has three NFL seasons behind him and he is only 24 yrs old. The Panthers want Cam Newton to be the leader of their offense if not the whole team and not an old WR that is winding down his career. Steve Smith has a powerful personnality and a powerful persona and as long as he was on the team Cam Newton would never become the leader they want him to be. Cam would never step into the huddle in the final minute of a game and tell Smith to be quiet and let him tell everybody what they are going to do. Chances are that Smith would either want to fight or he would walk off the field. The people in the Panther's "head shed" felt like it was time for a change in leadership in the locker room and to do that the old leader had to go. They also decided that the "new guy", DG,  was going to be the one that do it and face the rath of the fans. With their cap and contract situation they also know that it is going to be hard to field a team that comes close to last year's team but they are going to try.

I'm curious to see how they plan to change the way they have worked with the cap in the past and how they plan to do better in the future and put better teams on the field consistantly. There are teams that are always one of the better teams in the league. They may have a one or two year down period but then have a ten to twelve year run where they are always in the play offs. The panthers are one of the teams that have a good play off team one year, lose the majority of their good young players to free agency and suffer for at least six or eight years just trying to have winning records. I don't know how the good teams do it and the Panthers can't but suposedly Gettelman knows the secret and only needs a couple of years to get the plan into opperation. I'm waiting to see it and I do not want to hear a bunch of excuses why it fails to happen.

...I how did Ghetoman convince Big Cat to do the deed....I mean that pic of JR kissing Smitty on the head and sht...

Kinda makes you think there was input from other sources, doesn't it?   Do you folks really believe that Gettleman decided on his own to run off a 13 year, fan favorite, who was the only legitimate NFL receiving threat on the team?  You really think he did this without any input from coaches, or, without hearing what other players may have been saying?  Like a good GM should, Gettleman is taking the heat for the people who really called for this.
