How did we miss this little gem from Scott Fowler? / Top Dawg: Admit G-man fuged up so that we can move on

OP, if you want Hurney back as GM just come out and say it. that's what your tl;dr post pretty much says

He just wants the people who are trying to back Gettlemen(there is no evidence to suggest anything he has done will be beneficial) to admit that there are some fug ups. Smith ultimately took what amounts to a $4 million a year pay cut. If he signed with the first team he visited for that amount, we could asked him to take a cut in pay and still signed Nicks and Lafell.

I have supported EVERY move that Gettleman has made except that one, so don't cloud the issue by trying to bring the tired old you-want-Hurney-back response.  This has nothing to do with Hurney, the other moves that G-man has made, or whether or not the team went 12-4 LAST season.

Panthers fans get way too attached to players. It may be because I am not a part of the local community but I don't get the attachment to Beason. Great player pre-injury, great vocal leader but how was he any different to say Jerod Mayo up in New England? I don't see New England fans being so attached to Mayo if he had suffered so badly from injury resulting in him being traded.

Now I get Steve Smith is the greatest Panther ever, I have 1 of his jerseys, but if the FO feels that he is no longer worth his contract and it's time for the locker room to be transferred over to Cam then I'm good with it. I'll support Smith in Baltimore (as long as it isn't against the Panthers), I'll cheer for him if he gets in the HoF, I'll still remember him fondly as my favourite ever Panther but I'm not going to sulk for the next 6 months and constantly create threads any time he's mentioned online. There is a middle ground, you can still be a Steve Smith fan and appreciate everything he has done without ruining a perfectly good Panthers forum with constant whining about everything and anything that can be twisted to blast the GM.

I fear the day when we lose a couple of games and some idiot starts a thread saying it's because we cut Smith.

For the record, I'm not exactly happy that Smith is gone.  However, one thing that is chapping my ass about the whole situation is the terrible media in this town.  They have shown what a lot of us already knew and that is they are all pathetic wannabes.  If the Smith situation is an embarrassment, the media is who made it that way.  Whether you agree or disagree with letting Smith go, whether you're pissed about it or neutral, the Panthers handled it just like every other organization does when they let a player of Smith's stature go.  However, the media in this town, unfortunately, hasn't kept up with what one would expect of a town that has had an NFL team for almost 20 years and an NBA team for over 20.  Therefore, they go and find anything they can to try to "break" a story, even though they don't even do a good job covering stories that actually exist.  The sports media in Charlotte sucks and they started the Smith story, before it was even a story, just because they knew it would rile up the fan base and create a story for them and, furthermore, simply because they lack the creative juices needed to write mediocre stories, much less good ones. Sadly, many fans, including most of you here, are just feeding in to their hands.  That said, I guess it's hard to expect the media to grow in to legitimate sports reporters, when most of the local fans haven't shown any desire to do the same as fans.

Smitty was cut. Time to move on. There is nothing we can do about it but look to the future.

Yeah we'll all miss smitty and seeing him in another Jersey well hurt but we are Carolina Panther fans first and foremost. If not, then go be a Ravens fan.

Offseason is not even close to being over and while no one likes what the WR corp look like we have to trust DG to put together a capable corps. Quite frankly DG deserves at least that much for what he did last season.

Not sure what another thread like this accomplishes but unnecessary angst.

G-Man handled the situation no different than how The Patriots treated Richard Seymour and Lawyer Milloy. It was cold and painful but that's business.

Patriots already had established success, elite QB, and a HC considered one of the best in history. FA will still want to play for an organization that is successful even though they are ruthless. Panthers have been a losing franchise, has a QB that is considered good but not elite, and a HC who was on the chopping block before pulling off a 12-4 season. 2 different situations. One can afford to be a dick. The other needs to build a reputation of success before throwing their weight around.

Only when you admit you need to change the broken record. Blah blah blah blah

OK, I admit it. We need to move on. I need to move on.

I won't start another fuging thread about how G-man fuged up the Steve Smith situation during this off-season. I will even give you and the Huddle the courtesy of not starting an I-told-you thread during the season.  This is Top Dawg's promise, and I am a man of my word.

Now, carry out your part of the deal. Be a man, Khacki Lackey, and the lot of you.

Since the Dolphins locker room fiasco, the league has been forced to set standards for appropriate behavior on and off the field. Maybe the coaches and FO felt it was in the best interest of the team to let both Mitchell and Smith go? I mean face it, if I punch a coworker, I get fired and get arrested for assault. There was obviously a reason to release him and there's a reason we couldn't trade him. Nobody posting here has a clue what's going on behind closed doors, let it go and move on.

I'm analyzing that article like crazy for how we did Steve Smith wrong but the best two parts for keeping Smith were, he could spin a ball, and he did charity work.  You got cold hard evidence there top daaaaawg!

That's a totally simplistic way of looking at the article. Any long time Panthers fan doesn't even require evidence. Deep down in our hearts we already know it.  Sure, Smitty isn't what he once was, but it's far from the time to kick him into a hole and throw dirt on him.  You should be able to glean this from our less than stellar offensive play calling, our (now ex) less than stellar receiving corp, Steve Smith's modest production within the context, and, frankly, the interest given Steve Smith from the Ravens, Patriots and the Seahawks.

But, hey, if you can't see it, then what more can I tell you?

I agree that it's time to move on. But it's also time to set the record straight.

Your response has an apologetic tone to it. Smith's past bad behavior is just that: in the past. No one in his right mind is really thinking about that stuff anymore. I doubt that the coaches thought it was best to jettison Smitty. Sure, teams didn't want to trade for Smitty, but they surely had interest.  Top teams like the present world champions, recent world champions, and perhaps the best run organization in football (definitely a top one) were waiting so that they could pounce though.
