Continuity for Cam?

If we wanted continuity, we would had to break the bank for WRs who didn't produce all that well to begin with. I like our chances with guys that gettleman believes are better players

You guys on that side of the fence contradict yourselves without even knowing it. Why do you believe that Gettleman thinks another player is better than Lafell or Ginn just because he didn't sign them? If you don't know what his plan is then you simply don't know. For all we know he's on plan z right now.

You guys keep saying that we threw away our receivers when that isn't true. Lafell and Ginn would have stayed had the price been right. There is no reason to hamstring the cap even further to hold onto average receivers. Gettleman didn't look at the roster and say let me throw them all out just because he felt like it. He did it so that he doesn't turn into another hurney by paying more than what they were worth. Ginn is overpaid in arizona and Lafell is overpaid in new england. What you are basically saying is that gettleman should of matched or went over what they were offered from those teams. It's ridiculous.

I meant to change that. Not "thrown out." Rather "not retained."

And beyond that, if Gman would have just kept Smith (and cut him after ensuring a replacement for his production was found) this particular line of criticism goes away. Or cutting Smith and resigning Lafell and/or Ginn. It is the totality of cutting Smith while subsequently not resigning Nos. 2-4 and not appearing to have in place their [better] replacements is where the concern comes in.

there is no doubt that there are guys out there with better value than what New England and Arizona signed for.

I guess gettleman felt that the receivers on our roster could reproduce Lafell and Ginn's production that it was not worth overpaying and wasting cap space to hold onto those two. I understand people are angry at the uncertainty in it but I will beilieve in gettleman until he proves that I shouldn't

That's exactly it, it's not so much purging the entire position, it's doing it all at once. It would have been better to replace it piece by piece, or at least be able to land suitable replacements.

WIth the team's cap situation, they can't afford to replace piece by piece. If another team is willing to overpay for those pieces then there is really no choice BUT to let them go.

Furthermore, if McNutt or King are better players, why can't they beat out the poor producing (I agree 100% they were poor producing) Ginn or Lafell? It doesn't make any sense.

It would be odd if the organization felt they were better than what we had last year, and then give either more action.

Well right now we're paying Steve Smith to make plays for Baltimore

The argument that we needed to upgrade the WR position, IMO, is without question a valid one. We must upgrade the WR position. The fact that these guys are over the hill and aren't that good is even more reason to replace them.

However, again, just because they were poor NFL WRs (and needed to be replaced) doesn't mean that they should all be thrown out...at once...for seemingly a plan of rookies and second tier FA WRs as replacements. These rookies and second tier FA WRs may all end up being worse than what we already had in place. That's all. There should be a either a transitional  period (to groom the replacements) or replacements that have a history of being better than what we had.

Also, it begs the question. What does it say about McNutt if he could not see the field given the poor production of the WRs this season? It may mean that McNutt is even worse than the poor WRs already out there.

The reason we allowed the free agents to test the market was so we could judge what they were worth before either trying to resign them or letting them go.  No one was throwing them out, Gettleman just felt that for their production they were not worth the price that other teams were willing to pay. Ginn was actually the only one I think we will miss and that is only because Cam was one of the only QBs with the arm to actually throw it so deep that Ginn could get it. But is a number 3 guy worth almost 4 million a year? And how many did he have right in his hands that he flat out dropped.

We surely won't miss Hixon or Lafell.  Hasn't everyone been begging for us to find someone to replace Smitty for years through the draft?  This year we will.

Last year at this time we had Smitty and Lafell, that was it.  We picked up HIxon and Ginn after the big excitement died down and will do the same this year.  Last year we did nothing in the draft at receiver and this year we will.  So the end result will be a mix of veterans and rookies that will be fine in the long run.

What did it say about McNutt this year?  He has a ways to go before he will be ready to contribute big time.  He will be better this year but he won't be the number 1 threat or even the number 2.  Hopefully he develops and becomes a contributor this year and if he is going to start it will most likely be next year at the earliest.
