Hypothetically..I had a brilliant idea..Gettleman's Master Plan

then realized it wouldn't work anymore .. so we will turn this into a "hypothetical situation"

What if, someone had signed Hardy before he signed his franchise tender? Carolina would have received the two first round picks for him (They can't now, only way to move him would be in a trade).

Knowing what we know now with the offensive weapons around Cam, would you use those two picks to use to sign Jimmy Graham? TE by classification, but plays like a WR. They would still keep a 1st round pick this year and next, since they are giving up essentially the two they get for Hardy. It would probably give us more cap space too.

I'm just spinning wheels here.. thought it would be interesting if that happened..

He couldnt be signed before FA started.

Wait...what?

Now that he signed his contract (aka the franchise tag), he is not eligible to be signed by anyone else. Thus taking away the possibility that IF someone had signed him, Panthers would have got the 2 1st round picks for him. The only way he can be moved now is if they trade him.

So basically, if Hardy didn't rush to sign for his $13M and held off like Graham is doing, any team would be able to sign him to an offer sheet and Panthers could match or take the picks.

Its not hard to understand, is it too complex for the huddle? I'll try to break it down further - remember this is now a hypothetical situation, a would you have done this...

So ASSUMING:

1) Panthers Tag Hardy

2) Hardy doesn't sign contract right way

3) Another team (Lets say the Bills) negotiates an offer sheet for Hardy risking 2 first round draft picks to sign him

4) Panthers have chance to match offer, but decline. Hardy goes to Bills, Panthers receive the 2 first round picks

NOW - ASSUMING the off-season had gone the same in this situation how it currently has (I.E Cutting Smith, No WRs) WOULD YOU:

1) Sign Graham to an offer sheet risking 2 first round picks to sign him

2) Saints don't match offer. Panthers get Graham and lose two 1st round picks (The picks given up cancel out since received 2 picks from Bills in the Hardy situation)

So basically, it ends up being a swap of Hardy for Graham. However, depending on what team would have signed Hardy (Bills in my scenario) you could potentially move up in the first round this year. In this scenario you would gain the 9th overall pick from the Bills while losing the 28th pick to the Saints. That puts you in a position to basically add Graham and a top OT/WR for Hardy.

That would be absolutely spectacular but virtually impossible. No team is going to give up that in order to win the right ti pay him what he wants. The flip side is that he would never accept the amount offered by another team given the fact that they also likely lose draft picks.
