Matthias' Fantasy Mock 2

Matthias

Recommended Posts

This will be my last fantasy mock this off season.  After the free agency period is somewhat over, or in other words most of the dependable guys are gone, and we inch very close to the draft, I'll do my last "real" mock.  This mock is based on one of the topics in the main forum discussing trading Cam to the Browns.

The Trade:

Carolina gets- Cleveland's Two 1sts, 2nd, Next Year's 1st and conditional 3rd

Cleveland gets- Cam Newton

Description:  So let me address two issues with this trade.  Obviously panther fans see trading Cam away as one of the dumbest things we could think about doing.  I agree Cam is the best QB in terms of talent and outlook.  Yet going into year 4 and the prospect of giving him the richest contract for a QB in the history of the league, I still have questions concerning his mentality.  With guys like Russell Wilson and Andrew Luck, you can put them into a neat box.  Yet Cam has more of an outgoing nature.  There's nothing wrong with that, there's nothing wrong with a charismatic personality.  The thing is when you're trying to project his ability to perform and the kind of pressure he can handle, it's a scary thought not being able to pin down his mentality.  If the Colts were having a hard time, you know Luck will tell you the same thing and say they need to work harder.  If the Seahawks were having a hard time, you know Wilson will tell you they need to work harder etc. etc.  If the Panthers were having a hard time, Cam will tell you they need to work harder, but there's a chance he may lash out against the media.  Just some days ago Hardy was on ESPN discussing the Panthers.  His comments about Cam's improvement off the field kind of made me feel uncomfortable when we are talking about a franchise QB.

The other issue is would Cleveland really give up that much for Cam?  My answer would be if they were smart, most definitely!  Cleveland has one of the best receivers in the game, one of the best tight ends in the game, and THE best LT in the game.  If the Panthers had that kind of talent, Cam would be the MVP year in year out.  Just with Hoyer, the Browns looked like they would be contenders.  So imagine what they would look like with Cam Newton.  The better question would be why wouldn't the Browns make such a move?  Of course one would say if I feel Cam has that much potential, why would we trade him away?  The truth is we don't have what the Browns have.  We don't have an established receiver.  We don't even have a hint of a receiver.  Our tight end Greg Olsen is a decent receiver, but that's about it.  We have no O-line to speak of, and it looks like Cam will be our main weapon.  We don't have the draft position to truly build up all our problems in one year, and I don't know if Cam's psyche would hold up in the time it will take to rebuild.  So it would work out well for both parties in my opinion, possibly even better for the Browns. (Which is why I'm throwing in the conditional pick)

Free Agency:

Hardy signs a 5 year deal- 11 million a year

Cut Godfrey after June 1st- save 5 million in cap (After Hardy's extension and this cut, our cap would be 15 million give/take)

Champ Bailey- one year deal

Eric Winston- one year deal

Devin Hester- two year deal

Jason Avant- one year deal

NFL Draft: Panthers picks are 1st (Cleveland's number 4 overall), 1st (Cleveland's 26th overall), 1st, 2nd (Cleveland), 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th

1st Round Pick (Cleveland): Greg Robinson

0ap2000000299475.jpg

The best prospect at LT in this draft.  Everything says he will be a solid LT for years to come.

1st Round Pick (Cleveland): Jordan Matthews

jordan-matthews-4.jpg

The third best receiver in this draft in my opinion, also in my opinion the surest receiver.

1st Round Pick: Ha'Sean "Ha Ha" Clinton Dix

clinton-dix-web.jpg

A capable guy for replacing Mike Mitchell in terms of coverage.  It's yet to be seen if he has the kind of physicality Mitchell brought, but at the very least we won't have to worry about him being flag for a late hit.  This guy has hawk potential.

2nd Round Pick (Cleveland): Donte Moncrief

133943756_crop_exact.jpg?w=340&h=227&q=8

Great deep threat.

2nd Round Pick: James Hurst

hi-res-b087f75fbc53c78a44a9be6137c0d609_

Injury will cause stock to fall.  We may be able to get him in the 3rd, but I wouldn't want to take chances.  This guy has solid written all over his face, and would be a great RT for us.

3rd Round Pick: Jaylen Watkins

458346.jpg

I like him as a prospect.  He put up good numbers at the combine that would perhaps put him in the late 2nd-early 3rd range.  So if he slips a little, we will be right there to grab him.

4th Round Pick:  Brandon Coleman

brandon-coleman-rutgersjpg-a793dfe8844ae

The size of this guy is imposing.  He had a down year his last at Rutgers due to poor QB play and injuries, but he had a pretty decent combine performance.  Right now we have no credible receivers on our roster, with Lafell likely to be our only guy coming in for the 2014 season.  These three guys I drafted in this mock would be a nice crew to have in fighting against this lack of talent.

5th Round Pick: Storm Johnson

WPTV-Storm-Johnson-UCF_20140102053411_32

Here's a guy that I really like.  I'd say my favorite draft prospects in this year's draft (Not saying they are the best two period) are Jordan Matthews and Storm Johnson.  To me they have the ability to be regular probowlers.  Because of the devaluation of the running back position, a lot of good runners will fall to the later roundd of the draft.  Realistically, Johnson would go in the late 3rd-4th round range.  Yet I get the feeling like nobody hardly knows his name.  I'm very surprised at the lack of talk concerning this guy.  It makes me believe he could be had in the 5th-6th round range.  If that be the case, Panthers need to get this guy.  Bump Williams and Stew being here.

6th Round Pick: Isaiah Lewis

hi-res-7832420_crop_north.jpg?w=630&h=42

A hard nosed hitter, who I believe could start.

7th Round Pick: Spencer Long

129035494_display_image.jpg?1323905539

Gritty run blocker

Those draft picks would pry just about anyone from a team except maybe Brady and Manning in their prime, but like Joat said, nobody would give up that many picks.

Lots of holes in the scenario.

Going with just Anderson?  No plan for an hear apparent?  Why not let em keep their cond'l third and get Brian Hoyer at least.

Dont like Champ Bailey, Devin Hester but hey, it is a fantasy mock.

Definitely outside the box

I do think if something like this would happen, that the Browns wanted to trade for Newton, this would be reasonable all things considered.  They were going places with Hoyer.  Cam is a Super Hoyer times 3.  They have an established offense, and just added a good running back in Tate to their squad.  They are a QB away from actually contending for a superbowl.  The bigger question would be, would we be willing to deal Cam?  If I were the Browns, I would make that trade in a heart beat.  From the Panthers point of view, I would make the trade because of the amount of pieces we lost in one season.

As for DA being the starter, I'm confident he could do a great job for us.  Who would be the heir apparent?  Perhaps Marcus Mariota will slip in next year's draft, and we could mortgage the two first round picks next year to move up enough to get him.  Perhaps we could draft Kevin Hogan.  Whoever it would be, they will be working with loads of talent.  I mean Terry Bradshaw won 4 superbowls, and I very much doubt it was because he was the greatest QB of all time.
