So, lets see what Smith has to say (via David Newton)

With all the losers this organization has signed through the years, FA's and draft picks, this move will never even be among the top ten biggest mistakes. Aside from the way it was done (poorly), and all consideration of salary and cap space, you're moving out a 35 yr. old receiver. If that's your biggest mistake ever, then you're not the Panthers, because this franchise has made much dumber moves.

When it's all said and done Steve will have a statue outside of BOA, sign a one day contract to retire a panther, and be known as the greatest Panther ever. At that point we will look back and ask ourselves why did he leave? Was it worth it? What we do moving forward will have a lot to say about that. As of right now, it doesn't appear we will have a replacement for him this season. Forget about his leadership and the edge he brings to this football team, if you can't replace his production then what have you gained?

Also beware of the "Smitty Effect" and how it impacts are ability to sign FAs going forward.

Well, I remember several reports from over the last several years that Smith want to play a lesser role, that he was ready to be a complimentary piece. Not Smith's fault they never took the need at WR seriously.

Steve and his agent saw one last opportunity for a big payday. This is all this comes down too.  Just look at the difference in what he's going to make when you factor in the money we still have to pay him and his signing bonus.

Anyone who thinks this has to do with anything other then money is naive.

I don't have a problem letting a 34-year old #1 receiver go... as long as you have a #1 waiting in the wings somewhere.

I don't have a problem letting a 34-year old #1 receiver go... as long as there's a #2 on the roster who can step into the #1 role.

I don't have a problem letting a 34-year old #1 receiver go... if it makes the team better...

I do have a problem with letting the #1, #2 and #3 receivers go... with nothing in sight down the road and none of the above can be answered in the affirmative.

Good report.

I don't understand why Smith didn't say this publicly while he was still a Panther.  Why did he choose to wedge the divide further in the press here in Charlotte?  Why did he decide to serve as a catalyst to try and turn the fans on the Panther FO?

I respected him despite the fact that he was a dick to people, but after this I've lost respect for Smith for wearing two different hats...one to us....and one for the Ravens.

If this would have been his tune the whole time he'd still be a Panther.  It's obvious to me that he's just trying to say the right things to glorify his actions as almost being Paladin and paint himself as a poor victim.

The fact is....he wanted that back-end money a new signing bonus of 3.5 mil, and the same base salary he would have gotten here.  I've said before it's about money to Smith.  He's going to make about 12 mill this year.  That's a huge increase in pay.  This guy has just been using real politik to get the money not caring what's in his wake.  He's gone from one of my most favorite Panthers of all time to my most hated.  He did it so well that most fans are unaware of what his intentions were.  What a Benedict Arnold.

Steve Smith....bitch up son...bitch up.

I'm glad this fugger is gone, and I can't wait to see TD lay the smack on him.

What douche.  Glad he's gone.

So basically you believe that it was all about the money, and that Steve Smith had some Machiavellian plot to upset the FO as opposed to just keeping it real about Shula's suck-ass play calling? Never mind the fact that Smith has been surprisingly muted about the situation, and could have done more to worsen an already unimaginable and horrible situation just waiting to blow up.  Then you believe that he wants to come back to Charlotte and be the hero after all his diabolical handiwork, and that all Panthers fans are going to blindly accept him back into Panthers family after all that?

Come on, man.

This + the way we let him go is pretty much where I'm at. I know all the "stfu he got his money!!!" guys disagree, but he deserved to leave on better terms than twitter gossip, espn leaks and a phone call.

Steve Smith was going to be making in excess of 20mil over the next 3 years. If that sits well with you, I am glad you don't run this team.

He is not going to be worth the money we would have had to pay him. He was not going to help us lower that impact. He pretty much set this all in motion.

If Smitty wanted to remain a Panther, he very well could have.

That said. I am still enjoying the meltdowns of folks like mauclaw. Overreact much son? Please keep up the spiel, I am loving it.

And to ace boogie, if hurndog hadn't overpaid everyone and his brother. Including Smitty. We would not be in this mess. So this is not a problem that you can just slush off. It is a hurndog problem. But let the hate flow. Get it out. Then come back down to earth. Or as close to earth as you ever really get. Cuz dude, you are out there.
