So, lets see what Smith has to say (via David Newton)

Here you go.

"I am no longer a No. 1 wide receiver and I know that," Smith told Sirius XM's Bleacher Report radio on Thursday after the Carolina Panthers released him. "And I've been knowing that, and I don't have a problem with that.

"I will adjust to whatever team and whatever role that I would have. The only thing is I would like to know what that role is and what the expectation is so I can exceed it."

Maybe this was Smith being politically correct because he now has to sell himself to another team. But I believe Smith, soon to be 35, was ready to morph into the "other" receiver if the Panthers signed somebody capable of taking over the top spot.

He insists he's been asking management to get another top receiver for several years.

On his willingness to step into his new role and "play nice with others":

Smith was asked directly about those doubts on WFNZ-AM radio in Charlotte. He didn't refer directly to Gettleman, who had the ultimate say in the decision to release him, but he talked about individuals who hadn't been with Carolina since Day 1 judging him.

Gettleman is beginning his second year at Carolina.

"So your inaccurate assumption of something that has transpired is called an opinion," Smith said. "Whatever the case may be, my job is to be a football player."

"You can't allow an individual or individuals to change how much a corporation or organization has treated me. I won't allow that to happen, and I won't think about it."

Basically Gettleman wanted Smitty out, and, of course, Smitty feels some type of way about it. And I think that he should.

All this poo that I am hearing about Smitty's negative effect on Cam and the team in general---basically the flipping of the script---is definitely going to be taken with a block of salt (at best), and that block is going to be bigger than the chip on Smitty's shoulder.

The fun of this situation is that one side of the story is all you're ever going to get.

The front office is never going to come out and talk about why the decision was made, and they're certainly not gonna trash Smith.  You might get theories and whispers from the people who cover the team, but that's it.  Lord knows Newton's not gonna say anything about any of the behind the scenes stuff.

The rest is just fill in the blank.

You can look at how fast he was picked up and that speaks volumes. Especially since the Patriots and Seahawks wanted him as well

The move makes no sense.  It doesn't make you better as a football team, and trying to make sense of it is quite simply over thinking.  I don't know what happened behind closed doors, but this just seems like Dave did not fully understand and appreciate what SS means to the organization and its fans.  Seems more naïve than the Hitler you guys make him out to be.

His ability was never a question.

It sounds more and more like it was a chemistry issue.

Reminds me a little of the Lawyer Milloy situation with the Patriots years ago.

Good report.

I don't understand why Smith didn't say this publicly while he was still a Panther.  Why did he choose to wedge the divide further in the press here in Charlotte?  Why did he decide to serve as a catalyst to try and turn the fans on the Panther FO?

I respected him despite the fact that he was a dick to people, but after this I've lost respect for Smith for wearing two different hats...one to us....and one for the Ravens.

If this would have been his tune the whole time he'd still be a Panther.  It's obvious to me that he's just trying to say the right things to glorify his actions as almost being Paladin and paint himself as a poor victim.

The fact is....he wanted that back-end money a new signing bonus of 3.5 mil, and the same base salary he would have gotten here.  I've said before it's about money to Smith.  He's going to make about 12 mill this year.  That's a huge increase in pay.  This guy has just been using real politik to get the money not caring what's in his wake.  He's gone from one of my most favorite Panthers of all time to my most hated.  He did it so well that most fans are unaware of what his intentions were.  What a Benedict Arnold.

Steve Smith....bitch up son...bitch up.

I'm glad this fugger is gone, and I can't wait to see TD lay the smack on him.

What douche.  Glad he's gone.

But we went 12-4 Mr. Scot. There are other ways, than releasing the face of your franchise. Steve meant too much to this team for it to go down like this. You just can't replace a guy like Steve Smith.

I'm convinced that we will look at this move years from now as the biggest mistake in Carolina Panther history.

With all the losers this organization has signed through the years, FA's and draft picks, this move will never even be among the top ten biggest mistakes. Aside from the way it was done (poorly), and all consideration of salary and cap space, you're moving out a 35 yr. old receiver. If that's your biggest mistake ever, then you're not the Panthers, because this franchise has made much dumber moves.

    • And he still has one more win and a $110M contract, go figure?
    • People looking at the offense negatively need to step back a minute and remember that expectations were mighty low this year. We have a lot of young guys and rookies. And our qb is a newby in the system he is in with a new coach who has never been a head coach and signal caller combined.  This is a work in progress so only an approach which recognizes incremental improvement is valid for best measuring where we are versus  demanding immediate success after a 2-15 campaign last year.
