What Free Agent WR fills that void now?

Lets face it ALOT of times fans get it very wrong and I really could care less what fans of other teams think. We're obviously drafting a WR high. And we ARE going to sign some cheaper vets whether it's Cotchery, Jones, Britt etc. We didn't sign Mitchell or Ginn during the first week of FA and they panned out well for us. There are ALOT of Ginn, Mitchell, Captain level guys in the NFL, that's why Gettleman didn't bend over for any of them. I hate the Smith move as much as the next guy but I'm not going to burn our new GM who IS trying to fix our horrid cap situation and still field a competitive team for 1 move I disagree with. Anyone who thinks that is an easy task is delusional.

Gettleman did great in the draft last year. He's gotta nail it again this year. His best strength is his scouting/talent evaluation. He will draft players that can step in and play Day 1 ala Star, Short, Klein. Teams draft WR's that impact every year, we just have to be the team that does it this year.

We are going to be very active in the mid-lower level FA's. Like last year some will pan out, some wont. Fact is some of the big money FA's will not do squat next year but eat huge cap off their team, happens every year.  A lot of times the low tier guys have something to prove and can still make an impact. Can't judge the whole offseason and especially the 2014 season on March 15. There is still a lot of time to fill holes and build the roster. There will be more cuts after the draft and on June 1, when hopefully Hardy has signed a longterm deal and we actually have some money.

People on here are acting like 15 yr old girls that lost out on tickets to a Bieber concert.

In this thread, I don't see people "acting like 15 yr old girls in this thread."  Just like I said in my other post, people are more bewildered, if that.  It's more about coming to the realization that we will be in uncharted waters with our WR corps.  I have been watching football a long time, and never have I seen a team get down to receivers with no NFL catches in the previous year during the off-season.  That's unheard of. But the thing is, this was really not the primary point of the thread. The point of the thread is about a dearth of true leadership that's available in the FA market at receiver.  We're gonna have to go with some vet who hasn't been a leader (and probably proven that they can't be one), and a rookie who really shouldn't have to be one while making a transition to the pros.  Can we achieve another 12-4 season this coming season in this position? I wouldn't bet my life on it, but it's not impossible. It will make for a compelling season (the first part, if nothing else). But as the list of FA receivers gets thinner and thinner, we will have to "fake it" for a while.  Unlike some others, I do think that a guy with some swagger based upon WR1-experience at the pro level and experience with a particular QB is necessary to help younger guys transition at the position.  He can speak to the nuances of route running with that particular QB because of seasoned chemistry with a QB, but we won't have that this year, at least in terms of real game-time experience (no matter how you slice it).

No panic here, just realizing that it is what it is.

No and I wasn't calling people out in this one. But there are ALOT of posts on thei forum trashing(and by trashing I mean calling them bitch, dbag, pussy) Rivera and even Smith along with DG. I hate the Steve cut too.  Cutting Steve reminds me of when the Pats cut Lawyer Milloy and the players and fans of NE were like WTF. I can only hope by the time we get done with the offseason it will not be as bad as everyone thinks.

For whatever reason DG agreed with everyone that the offense needed an overhaul but like you said I have never seen a team boot every starting WR in 1 shot. I guess he is a rip the bandaid off fast kind of guy.

I do wonder if Rivera basically told him to do whatever else you have to do, but I need Hardy. It just seemed like a big 180 in Gettleman's tone a month ago and then tagging Hardy. Rivera being a def coach would probably choose his passrush over all else if he had to. Just speculation but you could definitely see Gettleman telling him it's an either/or between keeping Hardy and cutting Steve and letting so many walk.

I understand rational criticism and concern. And maybe by the end of the season I will find my DG pitchfork too. I'm just going to see whole picture first, not declare the season a wash in March. Happy St Patty's Day, Cheers

If we were the leagues worst wr core, statistically? What really have we lost? Based off that logic a group of no bodies should be able to come in and match that progress, right? Hopefully, they can do even better. I really liked the guys we had last year( Smitty Rules). but our wrs are already at the bottom. Can't go any lower from there.

I suspect that DG's plan all along is to sign a transitional vet that will buy time to allow whatever rookie receiver to develop.

One could argue Smitty could've been that guy to help transition the next era of receivers but I believe in the long run it will be more affordable this way.

Time will tell...

a guy i would like to see the panthers bring in is Jacoby Ford he is going to be he is fast and cheap and much like ginn has a lot to prove or he could be on his way out the league.

Yeah I'd be happy with giving Ford a chance. He's a good kick returner as well. He's got great speed and could benefit greatly from Cam's big arm.

James Jones (solid 2)

Ford (slot man, very cheap, playmaking ability)

Just need to draft 2 solid WR's, one with future number 1 potential and I think we may just be ok.
