What Free Agent WR fills that void now?

James Jones has nice #2 potential IMO. Add him, hopefully find a guy who can be a #1 in the draft.

Hester on a cheap deal for kickoffs would be nice, Sidney Rice seems kind of inevitable on a cheap deal if he's drawing no other interest and wants to come home, Cotchery/Sanders I'd be happy with as a #3, and even a guy like Danario Alexander would have nice potential...should he stay healthy.

James Jones is my first option and should be a Panther!!!!!!! Replace an 89 with another 89. Not saying we should give him that number tho and sure Jones would respect SS enough to not wear it.

But, we should really take a look at Darius Heyward-Bey!!!!! Hes really not that go to guy on every down. He's a possession receiver that could be a reliable no2. Never lived up to the hype but played well in Oakland. Hes not the kind of guy that matches well for Andrew Luck. I really believe that hes a better fit with a strong armed Cam Newton, especially in this run first offense.

James Jones + DHB + Cooks/Matthews/Odell/KB/Adams would help this offense a lot.

This team was never moving to L.A. So just stop it

Did I every say the team was moving?  No. Read more carefully.  I said we (meaning THE HUDDLE) were talking about it--the same people screaming "the sky is falling" now.

James Jones is a good #2.

Brandon LaFell is a good #3.

Jerricho Cotchery is a nice possession/redzone threat.

Jacoby Ford could be Ted Ginn 2.0

Damian Williams, Lance Moore would be solid pickups.

Emmanuel Sanders would be nice but he apparently has medical issues with his ankle...

All good options, and I would rather have a stable of good receivers than a "number one" and a bunch of scrubs.

About Smith's "leadership" at the WR position--I am not sure you need positional leaders, but let's say you do. Since he was drafted in 2001, how many WRs drafted since ever did more than bust here? Lafell may be the only one. Even Hackett and Keyshawn sucked here. Proehl might be the only free agent to thrive, and he mentored Smith. Smith said, "Why should I help other WRs on my team when they are my competition." I am not sure Smith was actually the leader we all thought he was.

So it's Steve Smith's fault that those receivers didn't pan out here? This is getting beyond absurd.

It would be nice for you to provide a source for that quote that you are throwing around. You seem to be going well out of your way to smear Steve Smith with every rumor, or statement that he's supposedly made to justify how things played out. He's already gone. Why continue on trashing him?

Would love Santonio Holmes if he is given an ultimatum and a contract with no guaranteed money other than his signing bonus. Him with Emmanual Sanders and drafting a big guy could really open our receiving core up.

Too bad we will not be signing anyone that will be playing by week 5.

For what it's worth, CBS Sports instantly had Steve Smith the best WR FA, even ahead of Decker

May be worth noting that the one position we neglected in FA last year to the upset of the fans was the one we ended up double dipping in the draft on. I know relying on that only sets up an even bigger meltdown if we neglect it and then don't draft any top WRs, but it's only logical to look at the pattern.
