Stepping back from the cliff...maybe DG knew something we didn't

I am stepping back and reflecting on what has (or has not) gone down in the last three days. Besides the obvious money issues, DG knows the Giants personal better then most and obviously better then any of us. I am sure he talked to his connections about what happened there last year.He signed Blackburn because he knew he was a solid player with great work ethic. He didn't pursue Nicks because of his loafing through last season and poor work ethic. If the plan is to go young, then the last thing this locker room would need is a vet WR spreading that crap around. We may not all agree at times with DG, but I have confidence that he knew what a distraction Nicks might become if the offense starts slow and he dogs it. Sometimes what doesn't happen is the best thing for the long term.

What about all of the reports that we were targeting him and even offered him a contract? What about his father prematurely saying he was coming home to be a Panther?

I don't believe for a second we didn't attempt to sign Nicks. I believe he just picked Indy.

I don't know...where all these reports true or just Nicks reps priming the pump to get him here? We will never know the real truth. But if there was someway that we could have worked out the money why wouldn't he be here? Unless he just picked Indy over us (which if reports are true, we offered more money),then there is other reasons we are not seeing.

Nicks has done little to nothing over 3 years

There are a lot of WRs still sitting who will mostly be sitting until after the draft

Linemen and CBs another story

Give the draft position not very optimistic of bargains rescuing the season

LT, good ones, aren't found in the scrap heap

Hardy was not worth this in my opinion...a DE is easier to find than a LT which protects the QB and the offensive leader

We will see

I can understand not wanting to spend with our cap being in the situation that it is, yet on the other hand you restructured a couple of guys' contracts with the expectation of shoring up either the WR or T position.  He didn't get that done.  Not to mention you still have Godfrey on the roster, not designating him as a june 1st cut.  Which would have freed up as much as 5 million dollars of cap space.  Finally you tag Hardy, and are yet to give him a new contract to free up money.  The way it's looking now, Hardy looks like a one year rental. (Especially with Hardy seeing the kind of offense we will have going into the season so far.  He will be the next Panther out of here on the first thing smoking.  Cam would be to, but we are likely to franchise him)

So there's a lot of double mindedness going on here.  Too many mix signals for me to be comfortable.

Hopefully Gettleman has a plan. I can understand not bringing in Nicks because there were a lot of red flags there. But what in the heck is going on at Tackle? I think you can go young at one of WR/OT but if we are throwing out rookies at both of those positions I don't think Cam will make it through next season.

Why rent Hardy for a year if you aren't going to field an offense capable of winning 8 games? We've either got to sign Hardy long term or get a better offense to make that rental worth it.

On the plus side, we should get a ton of compensatory picks as things currently stand in next year's draft. Might be worth trading some of our natural picks in the 2015 draft for picks this year in anticipation of those compensatories (but please not the first rounder). Then again I think DG is way too conservative to do something like that.

I agree we should all chill out... It's March!

The Panthers are trying to get rid of dead money. That's money you can't spend on your guys and good FAs.

We're not going to blow money on guys we might cut in 2 years because they're over rated. Can't we agree that this FA season has been pretty insane?

The Smitty situation was handled incredibly poorly. Nicks isn't worth it according Gettleman. From what'd others have pestered about the locker room and leadership theories, the Panthers are in a dramatic overhaul with the goal of contending for multiple Super Bowls. It won't be easy, and we see the bumps in the road.

Everyone is going to feel foolish about our off-season predictions one way or another. We don't know Gettleman's plan will be. So be patient!

i wanted nicks. i didnt want all the injuries and missed games hes had in the last three years. his neck is a bigger concern than all the foot/hamstring/concussion issues, but no body talks about it. all that said i still wanted him on a FING one year deal.....

dave is a pro scout at heart. hes also knows theres this event coming up that matches the panthers needs/wants. hes also knows teams will be cutting players june 1st and after the draft once they land their guys. all while other team have nearly filled their rosters and burnt though all the cap space. dave should make some moves.

you can not have more than 53 on a roster, ive given time looking at the current roster. in my best estimation, the panthers currently about 42(+/- 2 or 5) worthy players. add the 7 draft picks and you have 49 players. lasted year alone dave found travis bond, brain folkerts, wes horton, dc jefferson, taveras king, robert lester, melvin white, brain williams and marvin mcnutt. all are young and very cheap, THATS UNREAL!

take that all in and you have a 53.
