I'm not as worried about the secondary, TBH. We can afford to plug-in journeymen and young guys back there because of our front 7. There are a lot better guys out there that fit last year's FA approach than are left at WR & OL. Josh Wilson (WAS), Terrell Thomas (NYG) at CB would be solid, Ryan Clark at FS, Roman Harper for depth as a backup to Lester.

 

The secondary is, frankly, the least of our concerns at this point.

 

finally someone pays attention to reality. good points Catalyst. WR and OL will be our draft focus. i can see us drafting one S or CB but not both. every other position will be WR or OL in the draft. i think the front office is well aware that anyone they draft will need to be capable of being a starter by Week 1 next season. free agency is loaded with WR and CB still. and quality players at that. guys that have produced for their teams before. 

 

most likely, i see us signing a few guys on 1-year contracts for the secondary, and signing a veteran receiver on the cheap. the OL is in better shape than people give it credit for, though i can see 3 picks in the draft going to it. i think another 3 definitely go WR. i'll leave one out for a S/CB/QB pick (QB as in groom a Cam-like QB, maybe Tajh Boyd or Connor Shaw). but it wouldnt surprise me if that extra pick went instead to an extra WR/OL pick for depth. it also wouldnt surprise me in the least if we draft a TE instead of 3-4 receivers. but the staff would have to believe that such a TE can be the next Gronk. they wont draft some scrub to take the pressure off Greg Olsen. any TE we pick will have to be a stud who can match or exceed Olsen's performance.

 

our team is about to get alot younger and i like the idea of it. a bunch of young guys competing for roster spots? players know that the only thing that gets rewarded now in Carolina is production. lots of motivation for rooks and FA's to play their asses off.

That's the way I feel, and I have had a rough couple days. Losing Smitty, losing out on Hakeem, my heels lost in the acc tourney, and to top it all off, some obscure network on direct tv aired the Rae Carruth story, and I watched it.

Still staying cautiously optimistic.

What would you all be willing to sacrifice to trade up in the draft now .... to say pick up Sammy Watkins? Wondering how the draft will play out this year, and I get the feeling that's Gmans target to find the talent, not the FA. What say you? We do have at least an extra 7th to give up in conjunction with our first this year, wonder if that would be enough.

I know, probably going to be called an idiot, especially with the current mental state here on the huddle as of late
