Nicks officially a Colt per Schefter

How will the release of Smith help us win a championship?

By the team's logic, it will allow Cam Newton to take full leadership of the team without having to worry about Smitty looking over his shoulder demanding the ball all the time (even when he isn't as good as he once was).

That's their rationale.

Of course it doesn't. We may just field the '85 Bears defense and need the offense to kneel on the ball. BUT that is not what teams should strive for if they wish to continue to reach the playoffs, and compete for division titles.

Banking on a WR core (especially when Tom Brady is not throwing to said core) with no well-known members is highly ballsy but more likely idiocy-if you are trying to reach the playoffs.

Again, it is not like we fielded a great group of WRs and then suddenly they become unavailable throughout the season. It may be our strategy to start the season with no-well known WRs--and presumably some of those WRs would be rookies.

Yep...we should strive for more.  Offensive firepower has been missing from this team for a long time.  I guess that's what happens when we continue to hire defensive minded coaches.  I hope we surround Cam with weapons.  I hope some of the guys on our roster are ready to step up and can be those weapons.  Especially since we cannot afford to sign any known threats.

The DG huggers need to give it a rest.  DG hasn't earned a damn thing. Stop pretending as if he knows all, has the midas touch or is in anyway a proven NFL GM.  We have every right to question his judgement.  He casted out Smitty and a couple days later, a real GM, who actually IS proven, snatched him up.

This is the NFCS, where division winners haven't repeated in a while.  Where, TB will definitely be an upgrade and ATL can't possibly struggle another year.

I will hold my hold tongue for now, until draft day that is, however just looking at the trends fuming from this front office, I have a bad feeling.

Even if this team finds a way to win this season with this current roster, it will have nothing to do with DG.  It will be in spite of DG and his lackluster moves.

First...you don't know that Gettleman is an a**hole. Second, do we have any freakin choice but to low ball??? What money are we going to throw at them? Hurney screwed this team until 2016, plain and simple. Gettleman has to be the bad guy who rights the ship. I feel sorry for the man.

K so why did he have to cut Smith'?

You guys are not capable of giving a GOOD reason as to why Gettleman hasn't done poo except cut Steve Smith at a position we where already weak at.

that is not logical at all.Smitty may have lost a step but losing Him set us back at least 2 steps. This was personal b/t Smitty and G-man that's the bottom line, not any Cam Newton leadership issues. your scenario paints Newton as unable to lead on his own. I don't buy that or what you are selling for a minute.

If the 10 billion reports are true....because he felt Smith was impeding Cam's ability to lead the locker room.  That one hurt...we all agree.  But we can't let an emotional attachment effect a business decision.  Gettleman sure as heck didn't.  As far as not being real active...we have no money, simple as that.  Let's say we resign Mitchell, Ginn, and Munerlyn at contracts similar to those they signed elsewhere.  We would be about 8 million over the cap with about 15 free agents left to sign.

Im not getting emotional here when I say this. Cutting Smith was fuging stupid in every possible way. From a business stand point? We have to pay him 5 million to play against us, plus more to find a replacement. Also, at least 50% of people wearing jerseys at BOA are wearing Smith jerseys. He's a fan favorite, so this will hurt revenue.

From a talent stand point? He was our best option available without any question. It would be different if he had a replacement for him in mind (Nicks) but he doesn't.

There is literally 0 sense in cutting him unless like you said, Cam wanted him cut. In which case Cam can go fug himself until he starts beasting next season.

I don't see how there are so many people still believing in the gettleman plan. this is sickening. "Calm down everyone gettlew is doing whatever every other gm has been doing". I ve never seen a franchise cut it's number one wr without having a replacement or even a number 2 or 3 on the roster. This is dumb however you spin it.

Brady had two rooks last year and one average vet in Edleman.  His top target a year ago, a TE, was hurt for most of the season.  The Pats defense was no where as good as our.  Yet they still had a very good season.  I for one am excited about the thought of seeing our young wide receivers on the field.  Worst case scenario...our defense has to carry us, AGAIN.  Just because the WR's on the roster don't have last names you recognize doesn't mean they lack the talent to produce.

News flash dude. Comparing Tom Brady to Cam is way off ain't it. Cam ain't even in Brady league. Brady is an elite QB. Cam is good, but no where near Tom Brady good. Brady has always made avg or below WRs look good. Also Brady had good oline and a running game last year unlike us. It does take but a few seconds for Tom to pick you a part. Cam is not that good yet. Cam needs some big time WR with talent to help him and a good oline to protect him. So there is no way can compare Cam to Brady.
