David Newton: panic is unwarranted

Nothing wrong with cutting or trading smith.

Only problem I have is that the plans were leaked pretty early and nothing was communicated to our best player ever. Smells political and nepotistic but who knows. Teams often quietly shop around or quietly cut a player with lots of communication to the player. Gettleman has a different way of doing things and doesn't strike me as a guy who is going to get a ton of warm fuzzies from the players. May not be a bad thing.

As far as if it were the right decision I still lean toward no but smith was gone at some point. I think we would be better off with him next year but we will find out. I am not a GM for a reason

leaked? Seems to me that the media over blew a comment at the combine, in which gettleman was giving generic anwsers to every question. Thats the medias fault.

"Steve's had a great career," Gettleman told reporters in Indianapolis. "He really has. None of us are here forever."

That's quite the generic answer regarding the status of a player who was currently under contract at the time.

i see. Speaking in past tense doesnt help the situation. Getts will learn from this i bet. Im preety sure the media was trying its best to pry something out of him cause he usually never shows his hand.

What question was he asked before he gave that answer? Was it a past tense question? He might have been baited into this quote.

I do think Gettleman has a plan.

1) Start the same defense up front as last year. FT for Kraken is a huge portion of our money so obviously he builds from there. No reason we can't be in contention with potentially a #1 defense. Will fill in some secondary holes obviously

2) Nail the draft. I hope and suspect that Gettleman thinks he can get 7 starters in the draft. We need them. His Kugbilla and Barner picks from last year are still up in the air but may work out. If Kugbilla starts eventually he is a genius. Yes I spelled his name wrong. If Gettleman can beat out Hurney from a draft prospective we will do well

3) Get a few cheap FAs

4) Fix the cap so we have flexibility every year.

Sounds obvious and easy on paper.

Well we also leaked that we were looking for trades and leaked that he would be cut. No way I can be sure that came from Gettlemagic but we didn't have to reveal those things.

It's not a big deal just not the way I do things.

GodfreyLester isn't a bad combo at safety. Mikell got destroyed in coverage as opposing QBs had a 134.5 QBRating when they target him. That's atrocious to say the least. Mikell had a back for defensive scores, but that QBRATING really makes me shake my head. It's no wonder he was not asked to return to the team.

Lester, on the other hand, had the best QB rating against out of all our safeties last season. 3 ints, 1 pass deflection an 1 td compared to Mitchell's 4 ints 1 Td and 2 pass deflections. Lesterbdid this in 600 fewer plays. Lester is a capable replacement for Mitchell. He really showed improvement in his rookie season and I know he's pumped to be able to compete for a starting job. I expect big things from him this year if he starts.

It will be interesting to see how Godfrey plays with this front 7 who should be even more developed than what we saw last season.

I don't remember the exact question he was asked, but I don't think it was out of the ordinary. Bottom line, that's what the media always does, to every coach, GM, even players. They want a juicy quote, and they got it. Problem is, Dave should have sat down with Steve Smith first.

This has to be a learning experience moving forward for Gettleman.

Keep things in house. As Happy Panther talked about above, there was far too much speaking through the media, through leaks.

The corners were just atrocious last season, any way you cut it. Drayton Florence was the one saving grace here but with 2 ints and only 5 passes defensed, he left much to be desired as far as making plays on the ball.

Josh Thomas, Josh Norman, Melvin White and James Dockery are our corners. White saw extensive play as a rookie UFA starter and will resume his role with the two Josh's moving up the depth chart.

Wouldn't surprise me if we find a draft able starting CB somewhere in this draft and who knows what will shake out of free agency. there will be good competition for our corner positions and when the dust settles, hopefully some capable senders will emerge.

Again, our front 7 masks the play of these positions and it's a darn good thing too. All hope is not lost here as this is an easy area to upgrade on the cheap if things don't look like they are gelling. All of our backs are young but there is talent and some experience to be found. Who knows what another year of conditioning and coaching can bring for these guys but they are young and learning on the fly.
