David Newton: panic is unwarranted

I still don't see how gettleman treated smith bad. Someone please explain to me.

He said smith is being evaluated like everyone on the roster. That's fair to say. Then the media trolled gettleman. Its not like g man came out and said "were thinking of cutting steve smith"

And the fact that he is releasing him, its just a part of the game. What, we can't improve our team/ locker room because we are afraid of disrespecting someone? Sometimes they just gotta go.

G man gave out generic answers at the combine where this started, not showing his hand. Coincidentally he released smith. How could g man have handled it any better?

This is an important thing for us to remember, but most wont.  We've had several posters who've gone all psychotic about the lack of marquee signings.  We're going to hope and test Gettleman's eye for talent.  We're going to throw rookies to the fire like we did last year.  We bargain shopped last year and went 12-4.  We can do it again.  It might be to purtiest way to run a team, but if this is how you build a successful, winning team.  Then so be it.

The prior points about the sentimentality of the prior administration is what we're so used to seeing from our team.  The soft, cuddliness of a fierce jungle cat?!  Maybe we've needed to sharpen the claws, trim the fat, and get real about our team.  In the future, we'll be able to figure out our running back salaries, have less money devoted to players who aren't here, and more money going to the right players.

If this works, it could be a beautiful thing!

Believe me,hope you guys are right. Nothing that would please me more then having the rooks come out kicking ass again. If DG can find another crop like that on offense in this draft, then he is the man.

I feel like we are using a temporary formula until we have gotten rid of hurney's aftermath. But, we can still win. It seems awesome to me! Most teems can't do both. Well, we seem to be able to rebild and win at The same time

It would be great. My only concern is that while our D rooks beasted, our O rooks will have more of a learning curve. Just like in TC and the start of the season, the D squads usually have a leg up on the O squads. I dunno if that made sense.

Between Kugbila, Solatolu, Scott and Chandler, we have good competition and depth at offensive guard. All but Kugbila have starters experience.

Chandler actually played his best at tackle, with only 1 QB hurry in 40 snaps. It's not who I want to start here, but at least he is serviceable. A draft pick for RT is pretty important, but no need to reach and like many have said, there is Moses, Mewhort and Bitonio that should be available at our second pick who could probably start from the get go.

If Bell can make that move to LT, where the staff says he is more natural because he is left side dominant, we could have have something here. Outside of 3 bad games, he only gave up 2 sacks in the other 13 games. That's pretty solid. He wasn't so hot in the run game, but how often do we actually run left anyway. Its logical that Bell shoukd improve between now and the start of the season so it's unknown as to whatbwe are gonna be looking at come preseason. Getting Wharton back would be nice to pair up with Bell if Bell makes the move to LT. The fact that we made an offer to the Cincy T shows there is concern, so that leaves questions. We'll just have to wait and see how FA and the draft shakes out before we really know the options.

Garry Williams has starters experience at RT and Travis Bond out of UNC adds some depth at tackle, so it's not barren at T, just thin. At least there are options. They are all pretty young and that also means there is room for improvement. It's not a bunch of washouts or guys off the street.

No one is talking about Chris Scott but he had some really solid starts, after he got his feet wet, no reason to think he can't start at guard, regardless of whether Amini or Solatulu are ready.

Bell/Silatolu/Kalil/Kugbila/Chandler is at least a line. Add Wharton and a rookie in there and it could be upgraded on the cheap. It's all dependent right now on who we draft and whether Bell can make that move with a solid offseason of conditioning and a strong camppreseason. We could surprise especially considering the dour outlook going on right now.

just a few posts ago, you said you didn't know what DGs plan was, now you're saying you know he doesn't have a plan. which is is, son?

First off I'm not your damn son, Second I said stop acting like he has this master plan. That doesn't mean that he doesn't have (A) plan. It means he doesn't have some perfect plan that has no flaws.

Nothing wrong with cutting or trading smith.

Only problem I have is that the plans were leaked pretty early and nothing was communicated to our best player ever. Smells political and nepotistic but who knows. Teams often quietly shop around or quietly cut a player with lots of communication to the player. Gettleman has a different way of doing things and doesn't strike me as a guy who is going to get a ton of warm fuzzies from the players. May not be a bad thing.

As far as if it were the right decision I still lean toward no but smith was gone at some point. I think we would be better off with him next year but we will find out. I am not a GM for a reason
