Losing Mitchell, Munnerlyn, and Ginn would not be so bad if it were not on top of everything else. I think they are replaceable.

 

My issue is this. We have Cam Newton. Cam Newton people, entering his fourth year, he's not getting any younger. Every year he has had new receivers coming, and going. Now all he has is Greg Olsen. Cam cannot simply snap his fingers, and suddenly have immediate chemistry with a player, or players in this case as it will be in the 2014 season. It is going to take him time, just how much time it will take is the question.

 

Now to the OL, I love you Zod, but you are putting some real positive spin on that. It's about as close to a disaster as you can get.

It seems like we aren't even bringing in anyone for visits... while simultaneously being more than willing to spill dirty laundry publicly.

 

I understand the cutting of Smith but I am disappointed in how Gman's front office handled it.

The fact that you dont ever realize that New Orleans and Atlanta have taken Bigger steps back then us this year says all I need to know about any possible conversation that could have taken place with you. and yes Tampa has improved some, but when you were that bad last year you really cant get worse.

 

 

For those of us that just don't have time to keep up with more than the Panthers (which is not meant as a slight against anyone at all that does), could you explain how NO/Atl have gotten worse, if you have time?  I'm honestly curious and it would make me feel better.  It looked like NO just got quite a bit better from big name stuff but I honestly admit I haven't paid close attention at all

after starting as a rookie, and suffering one injury, he sucks and he's injury prone???????

 

At the end of his first season placed on IR and before his second season begins, IR.

 

 

So in his only two seasons, he already has two IR's. And he's not very good, just because you start doesn't mean your good. He can improve, but he needs to be playing to improve and well.... he hasn't been playing.

It's not, only positive they have had was the addition of Byrd, but was he that big of a upgrade?

I don't know how it's an improvement.  I asked you how they got worse because I was curious for your perspective.  Please re-read my post and tell me where I said how it was an improvement overall, or that they have gotten better definitively - I qualified my post pretty clearly imo.

 

Byrd is a gigantic upgrade at safety, though.  Dude's pretty fuging good IMO - but the other losses hurt.

That may be or become a bigger issue.  Everyone shouldn't assume that signing Cam to a long-term contract is a given.  Pepp soured on the defensive staff / team and decided to walk.  When you take off the homer glasses, if Shula and DG cant get it together, you never know. Just because we drafted him doesn't mean he is guaranteed to stay with us.  He will get a big contract with or without the Panthers.

 

Table that ... we have enough to discuss with free agency.

Zod made all valid points - production from the players lost can be replaced. Losing Smith and Mitchell stings, but its nothing the franchise can overcome.

 

We are all dying for a signing to help the WR core, and I believe we will get it eventually. I think Rice, Edleman, and Jones may be too pricey for the limited cap space. Austin is on the fringe of being too pricey. 8M in cap space will go quick with needs for a veteran OT and WR. 

 

The way I see it, Panthers will have to have an A++ draft to off-set their inability to spend this off-season. Round 1 will be interesting - with how FA has played out so far, teams that were projected to take safeties may not need to. Could Calvin Pryor or Dix be there when it is time to pick? Possibly - They would step in and replicate, if not out produce what Mitchell did last season. What about OT? This seems to be the consensus pick of experts. Kouandijo and Martin seem to be the ones who will be available. Then of course you have the deep WR class. I think Gettleman passes on a WR in round 1.

 

Where I am going with this is that the production can be replaced with 2-3 FA signings and in the draft. I think this is Gettlemans master plan with limited cap space. I'm frustrated like every fan, but I still have a faint sparkle of hope Gettleman knows what he is doing being patient the first few days.

 

I think he finds a starting OT from what is left on the FA heap, signs a WR like Jones or Austin plus possibly Lance Moore, and fill in the DB. Then in the draft, I can see him going OT/SS if Pryor or Dix is there in the first, WR in 2nd Rd (Donte Moncrief anyone?), OT/DB in the 3rd, DB/WR in 4th, and starts to fill in positions after than in rounds 5-7. I'll go on record that Dri Archer in the 5th would make this offense dynamic, even for Shula. 

 

You look at that WR corps of Jones/Austin, Moncrief, Moore - thats suddenly just as productive, if not more so than Smith/LaFell/Ginn.

the OL was not that good last season so I don't see the loss of Gross as a sign of hope we will be better or even as good.

Olsen, without WR's (SS) to draw the D ,will have a tougher time of it. he is a good TE but if we don't have other real threats the D can key on him.

 You may say the WR corp was less than stellar but I don't see any of the remaining CB's as being able to cover them much less what you would consider a stellar corp except maybe in the pre season. The bottom line is on D if the front seven get shutdown(SF playoff game) then the secondary will be sitting Ducks again.on Offense with the same OL minus Gross we will see more of the same with a lackluster run game and an ineffective offense in the RZ.

 things can get better but I don't see the current situation as better than what we had or even the same.
