Steve Smith's release, while heartbreaking and handled terribly, was necessary. Receivers decline quickly when in their mid 30s, and Steve had shown signs of such two years ago. Allowing his contract to continue another year would have made it more difficult to sign core young players all while not guaranteeing an adequate return on investment this season. Gettleman made a tough call, but it was the correct one.

Ted Ginn was exciting to watch, but fans forget the many drops he had that could have gone for long gains. Panthers fans are so thirsty for even average wide receiver play they forget what good receiver play looks like. I would be all in favor for keeping Ginn at a low price, but he is now being over paid in Arizona. You can't fault Gettleman for that.

I  pretty much agree with your sentiment, but for the part about 89.

 

The Steve Smith deal was not necessary. Everyone knew what he was and what he is.  You can say it how many times you like, but you'll never convince many of us otherwise.  The release would have been more appropriate after this coming season if he was to be released at all.  But even after saying all that, you do remember that his release wasn't about the money according to sources? What's that? It was about the money?  Make up your damned mind. The man wasn't even asked to restructure or take a pay cut.  Smith was a distraction, remember? But, but, he was also a leader.  There is some obvious lying, hypocrisy and/or saving face going on.

 

Basically we all were finally waiting to get to see 89 tearing it up in the slot, with two actual receivers that were worth a damn on both sides. Hurney and G-man took that away from us, period. Moreover, when Agent 89 succeeds wherever he goes at a relatively high level, then I expect all of the doubters to be the first in line to eat their crow like men.

 

 

Ginn, overpaid?  That's arguable. We hardly know the specifics, but it sounds about right for what a top return man who can also effectively fill in on spot duty as a modestly productive WR should be making. We just couldn't afford him and hope that some cheaper guy that we have on the roster (like Barner) or in the draft can make up for his loss.  Am I saying that I would have re-signed Ginn (or any of them)? No, but I wouldn't actually exaggerate to support a decision that was neither good or bad, but just a decision.

 

Dave will eventually have "this", but right now he has overplayed his hand.

This what everyone should be reading when it comes to the Defense, Capt was never more then boarderline average, I always wondered why everyone thought he was so good, unless they have just never seen good cornerback play before(have not watched enough football to know better).

 

Then why the hell was he starting in the first place?  I love how folks completely forget how fuging mediocre Rivera was before catching lightning in a bottle.  Captain was Terry Cousin 2.0, anytime there was a big pass play against us, it was a guarantee that #41 would be trailing the play from behind.

 

The bottom line is the rest of the South is improving immediately while Gettledouche is sitting around doing the knuckle shuffle on his piss pump.  Hurney didn't sign Hardy to a $13 million deal either.

Concerning number 1 and 2. True and true. Not false they are true.

 

Amini sucks and injury prone, Gary Williams Sucks, Byron bell sucks and we have a huge hole at left tackle. Wasn't the idea that our offense needed a large improvement? So using "the same" offensive line that struggled so much last year a good answer

 

(I expect quite a few changes here for the record, I'm just saying that line-up you listed blows and considering the thoughts about Shula, we need jimmies and joes, not x's and o's.)

 

Also our sole receiver is Greg... who is a tight end, so.... yeah. As far as WR's go, not one who caught a pass from Cam is on our squad for next year (Lafell MAY be, but oh boy for joy!!!) So we need a new #1, #2 #3 and #4..... will they be the improvements we need? Playoff quality? 

 

(I also think G-man will address this need, but I'm just saying there is  A LOT of work to be done here, for years we've failed to find Steve's replacement, now we have to replace, him and the 3 guys behind him? Sheesh!)

 

I know a lot have OVVVVVVVVERREACTED about this, and we really shouldn't.

 

But some of us are just saying that can we IMPROVE the O-line AND make the WR playoff quality? Make both playoff quality really, because our o-line, well, sucked last year.

 

We'll see and I'm pretty patient especially after 12-4 (which wasn't all g-man by the way)

Our O-line was one notch above a failing grade last year.  Lets not pretend any O-lineman other than Kalil is worth trusting.  Everyone else is either a warm body, or unproven. 

 

I'm not claiming the sky is falling just yet, but pretending the O-line doesn't need an entire draft to itself plus a few cheap FA's is nutts.

Well said, but like others the only difference I have is Godfrey... he's WAY overpaid and we can get 5 million in cap back by making him a 6/1 cut.

Marguide pointed out that Godfrey had to be medically cleared before he could be cut, else the team would be liable.

agreed with most every thing, tho i don't wan to see godfrey play another down in a panthers uni, mainly because of the price tag not being worth the production. we can find at least equal talent for much cheaper. we need that money elsewhere.
