Don't blame Gettleman for the trouble we're facing now

Mitchell will be replaced by Godfrey, another player already on the roster or a draft pick. No problem. There's just too many safeties out there to worry about this need. They'll still be playing behind the front 7 and that makes this an easy position to field.

For all the speed in the world, Ginn couldn't catch a ball past 15 yards, so all he was could for was as a return man and the occasional trick play. How much is that really worth in monetary value and how hard, really, do you think it is to replace? Again, we have McNutt, King and Polaris on the roster, surely one of them can replace Gonns offensive production. The return part, well, we have a draft super deep with WR/returners who not only can return but can also catch better than Ginn. We'll draft a replacement. Easy fix.

Smith. Not gonna go into this, but this draft is really deep at the WR position and the price tag will be 10% of what Smith cost us.

Gross. He retired. We didn't have the money to sign one of the higher tiered OTs available in FA, not that they were worth it anyway, so don't cry about spilt-milk. Yes, the position is vital and it is a major concern, this will take time to sort out.

Munnerlyn. Go to the post about Mitchell here. Easy fix

Lafell. Go to the post about Ginn. Easy fix.

Hangartner. We have returning linemen. One, a third rounder. We have the draft.

Wharton. If he returns, that'd be great. He's not gonna demand big$ and we're not gonna pay it anyway. So let's hope he'll come back and who knows? Maybe he goes out like Gross did.

We have holes, what team doesn't. We've lost fan favorites...again, what team doesn't? The one thing we didn't lose, was the true core of the foundation for this franchise's present and future. And that's saying A LOT! Take a deep breath and let the offseason and draft play out. It's not nearly as bad as many of you claim, nor is it as bad as could be if we had let one of our best and brightest stars walk.

Cool beans then.

I love the fact that when people don't agree with your assessment you get snarky.

Still facts are this team was 6-10 and 7-9 before the 12 -4 season. While going 2-14 in every close game situation. Before last season. The trend shows a better team then the record suggests and that team finally breaking thru.

You should understand the premise by now (you live it).  if you say stupid poo, people will call you stupid.  That is why you are being called stupid.

Nothing stupid about my opinion i'm making valid points and because you don't agree with it you're acting like a 8 year-old.

You will notice I never called your opinion stupid. Just said I didn't agree with it. You have decided to be a child about somebody not agreeing with your football opinion?? Something neither one of us are getting paid for. How pathetic is that.lol

If we're having losing seasons 10 years from now, are we still going to be whining about Marty Hurney?

You think cutting Smith will affect us in 10 years? How about shedding this sentimental contracts? Rather start rebuilding our cap now while we have a staff that can get wins out of I undrafted free agents! Never know what we may hit on in this process, another Cruz or Randle.

Blame the dumbass that preceded him

http://espn.go.com/blog/nfcsouth/post/_/id/46113/panthers-cap-woes-will-last-several-years

Basically when Hurney went ballistic in 2011 by signing all the players he drafted that were the core of a 2-14 team, he backloaded them so much that 19 player salaries were scheduled to account for over 100 million next year, which is atrocious, and it was well documented at the time those deals were made that it was going to be a problem for years. Of course the next year Hurney decided to spend what little future money we had left on a guy who played a position we'd already signed a guy to play long term. You have heard me complain about it a million times but now you realize why. The situation we're in is absolutely paralyzing. I don't know how the departure of Gross, Smith, and Beason affect that "107" number but that gets us down to what, exactly? Gettleman can't make chicken salad out of chicken poo, and that's exactly what he's had to deal with ever since he took the job with Hurney's obnoxiously overpaying contracts still on the books for years.

Bingo!!!! That was spot on and the Panther fans that are whining and pointing fingers at Dave Gettleman need to "Ice up son".

Hurney got us into this nightmare and Richardson permitted him to do it. The Panthers aren’t in a position where they can afford to sign big-name free agents to long-term contacts. That’s because they already are facing a cap mess for this year and potentially for 2015.

Guys, Hurney made Charles Johnson the highest paid player in the league in 2011.

Then he signed two players at the least valuable position in all of football to long term contracts, with the overspending on Stewart and Williams.

The OP was spot on.  Hurney is the reason we can't sign anyone, not Gettleman.

Wasn't Gettleman the one who signed all the cheap free agents last year that nobody thought much of, but ended up playing huge roles in our 12-4 season?

Gettleman cannot change what the cap is or what the market demands for players.  He's doing exactly what he needs to be doing, building around our young core through the draft and signing cheap free agents so we don't continue to have this problem every single year.

Oakland's running backs are making around 2 million this season total.

Carolina's? 17.5.

(I would take my chances with McFadden over DWill and Stewart regardless of contracts)

Oh, also theres this :

Dead Money

TOTAL $17,840,241

Thats not including 3 million from Steve Smith.

So basically, the Panthers are paying 37 million in cap this year for our Running Backs and players not on the team. And Gettleman had nothing to do with that. Is this still his fault?

Didn't Gettleman cutting Smith create a lot of that dead money? Isn't some of it from the Gross restructure as well? Gettleman's had a hand in this as well.
