Don't blame Gettleman for the trouble we're facing now

Does anyone else find it odd that give Gettleman all the praise when we are doing well and give Hurney all the blame when things don't go our way?

I'm not saying Getts is the devil who deserves all the blame. I'm just suggesting that it seems some people will defend GMan no matter what and some people will hate him for things beyond his control.

Maybe we could find balance somewhere on this issue.

Gettleman has had one year at the job, performed a great draft and did some wonderful things in spite of our cap last year, and 2 days into FA this doesn't make sense?  If he performs another good year under these circumstances he deserves to be given more benefit of the doubt ..  while Hurney has written his legacy, and therefore it is judged.  Let me rephrase that, Hurney's only been gone 1.5 years..  how much cap space can you clear in 1 year as GM?

which brings me to this....

Yes, we are somewhat strapped cap-wise.  But, the Cowboys and Redskins spend wildly almost every year and still manage to do it again almost every offseason.  I know they are bigger markets, but the point remains.  There are ways around it.  And if we knew this, why not just cut all the big contracts last year and eat the hits this year and get it over with?  Instead, we get teased with a successful season finally, and Gettleman elects to do nothing.

I would strongly consider after reading this article that few teams are ever in such a pathetic situation as we are, hence why most other teams aren't having the problems we are facing..  And like I mentioned above, it's been 1 year.  How much cap room should be a reasonable expectation to clear in 1 year?

I agree, the Smitty release was fumbled..  Aside from that, I feel pretty ridiculous trying to pretend that right now I'm able to judge anything about Gettleman's process in the midst of a total fugup by Hurney, one year into the job.

And also, it's impossible to pretend like what Gettleman does through the next 2 years is any indication of what Gettleman is going to have done in 10 years.  The immediate future is heavily dictated by extreme circumstances.  We haven't even seen Gettleman sign his 1st real contract, much more important though- his next 3-4 long term contracts, which then give us peon fans something to analyze.  Something tangible.

What isn't tangible is what you think you are deciphering right now..  I mean, is there really a strong argument against that?

There are people who would make excuses for Gettleman if he whipped his junk out and pissed all over the media at a press conference.

"he had to...  we're cap challenged."

Generally the Cowboys and Skins heavily pay out 1-2 huge contracts a year to "superstar" players and don't go on huge FA binges like the Bucs and Broncos are this year.

Cowboys and Redskins also can't compete with the sheer amount of valuable studs on our team.

Think of how many guys on this team are legitimate stars that could play for any team.

Cam, Luke, Kalil, Olsen, TD, CJ, Krakken, Star, Tolbert (and you can argue Short in here if you'd like, Hell I'd argue Gano and Nortman were pretty studly last year too).

Das a lotta studs.

Think about the average players on this team that are being paid like superstars.

Dwill, Stew (healthy or not, overpaid), Smith (pre-cut obv), Godfrey and we might still be eating money from Beason.

Thats somewhere between 20 and 30 million, approximately 1/6 - 1/3 of the salary cap.

Das why we can't have nice things.

Also the Cowboys and Redskins used the uncapped year as a dump for dead money, which the NFL warned against doing and penalized appropriately for doing.  All that money is off the books now though.

Gettleman's first season with the panthers and we have the first winnning season and playoff berth in years. I think gettleman deserves some allowances until the team fails to get another playoff berth.

All valid points.  As I said, this is a crazy time for us as a fanbase.  I don't recall ever having a worse opening three days of free agency, EVER.  We are angry, sad, confused, and a host of other emotions.  We are talking in absolutes.  Some in favor of Gettleman, some hating his guts, with myself currently falling in the latter group.

I'm not claiming to know all that's going on, and anyone that would is just admitting to being an asinine idiot.  BUT, as a I said, there are still a lot of questions to be answered and that's why emotions are running high.  We DON'T know what is tangible, outside of cap numbers...  We don't know what his plans are.  And right now, it appears as though we didn't have one.  The Smitty situation is the most disturbing.  If it was all about cutting a guy with declining numbers and production as his cap number goes up, as I said, why not just go ahead and get it all over with, or at least a majority of it?  Cut Stew, DeAngelo, Godfrey, etc.  But, no...  He just cut the franchise's best player of all-time, and with all of the conflicting reports out there, the only thing that emerges from that nebulous of rumors is that there was definitive reason it was him and not someone else.

As I asked before, why do we let a guy walk who proved to be an integral part of our top ranked defense last season in Mitchell, while we keep another guy who didn't deserve the contract he signed to begin with and is essentially making what Mitchell just got paid?  And yet, I see all of these guys in their zen-like, wisdom-filled states telling those who are angry about Smitty, "Well, it's better than Hurney.  Good to see someone who doesn't value loyalty over production."  It's bullshit.  Smitty on one leg, and half an ass is better than Godfrey on his best day in their respective duties.  Mitchell proved to be a better player than Godfrey, and yet, Mitchell is gone and Godfrey is still here...  AND coming off of an achilles' tear, which usually takes almost two years to get back from fully.  He was among the worst safeties in the league before it, I can't wait to see what he does coming back from it, LOL.

But, I'm supposed to believe all of Gettleman's moves are dictated by and motivated by the cap situation, and yet, we have plenty of evidence saying it is not.  There ARE other ways of handling it man...  You're my boy bleys, but I just don't buy that what he's done is what has had to be done.  He has dropped the ball and I don't trust that their isn't some other factors behind his decision aside from "strictly business."  There is a reason why the players have been outspoken about their dislike for him.  There is something to be said about his lack of tact and complete disrespect towards the greatest player in our franchise's history.  There is something to be said about his flub talking about Cam going into last season.  He's coming off as an egotistical, tactless douche with motivations outside of business decisions and I'm tired of him getting a pass for the decisions he is or isn't making and the words he is saying.

IMO this is the real reason we're in cap trouble now:

@bengoodfella They got in trouble because the owner lost his wallet for a year, and then had to wave it at everybody when he found it.

And I wouldn't be bringing up the Cowpokes or Deadskins cap situation in any discussion. They were both hit with cap penalties that they are suffering through now. Washington with $36 million over 2 years and Dallas with $10 million. From an article last year:  http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/2013/3/18/4119196/nfl-unyielding-redskins-salary-cap-penalty

And Dallas was projected to be $31 million over the 2014 cap: http://tracking.si.com/2013/10/20/cowboys-salary-cap-2014-space-jay-ratliff/

we'll see..  at this point I'm pretty well detached so it's whatever at this point.  For me, most everything outside of Smitty will have to play out, but Godfrey still counts against the cap to release, plus we would be adding roughly 5mil a year for Mitchell?

If that's correct, it seems to me that Godfrey is going to technically be a cheaper option.  And if they error on the side of a pass rush, I would assume their expectation is they can get similar production from Godfrey without costing the team another 5mil a year in an average safety.  That or they find that Mitchell sticks to his word (back when he himself was all amped up on emotion) and spoke as if Carolina was the place to be...

Whether us fans agree or not is up for discussion but drastic times call for drastic measures..
