Blind loyalty is running thin.

The fact is that Gettleman was completely open and honest about how this year's free agency was going to go right from the beginning. Now everybody is pissed off that he was telling the truth. The man was trying to brace us for this situation and we ignored him. In my eyes that's our fault, not his.

He has waited a long time for this opportunity to be a GM and he is trying to do it the right way. He has been around long enough and been a part of enough championships to know what it takes to build a roster. This is really what should be giving us a bit more faith. Blind loyalty? No. More like interested to see what this man can do next because he has done quite a bit for us so far. He is certainly gutting the parts of the roster that needed it and that gives me hope that he is paying attention to the problem areas. Even if immediate satisfaction isn't possible.

Last year was last year.  G-man was the new kid on the block, selling dreams to "outcasts" of the league who were willing to give him the old college try.  It was magic. Gettlemagic.  Well, like some of us have tried to tell others: The league is looking and watching now.  Don't be naive.  Guys with a little bit of game this year may not fall for the smooth talking anecdotes, proverbs and promises from good ol' grandpa-like Getty this year. They've seen that act. Add in the Smitty debacle and you never know what guys are thinking and how it's affecting the perception of the franchise.

Now I am not saying that this is the case (at least for everyone looking in), but what we may have here is the chickens coming home to roost.

exactly, I should have just read this first instead of asking the braintrust.

I don't understand what act, what dream was he selling? What smooth talking specifically are you talking about? Gettlemen believed these " outcast" were talented and gave them a chance to prove it. They did and now some of them are receiving far better money and opportunities then they would have had our GM not recognized their talent. I don't see how this wouldn't be appealing for player who are in similar positions this year

Neither Ginn nor Mitchell wanted to leave Carolina (at least before the Smitty thing,,,).

The dream was being here for a longer term deal with a decent pay raise.  Last season was the prove-it season.  Well, they did exactly that, but instead of being able to settle down for a while and grow some roots with a team, fans and a community that respected them for their efforts, they had to go somewhere else to be rewarded for their efforts.  Yeah, it's a business, and yeah G-man was in a tough position, but I would bet the way he was talking to them a few days ago barely reflected what he was whispering in their ears this time last year.  He ultimately low-balled them (as the market showed), and they got out of Dodge.

Like I said, granted it's a tough time for G-man, but if I can figure this stuff out just from a distance, what do you think that other players who may fancy themselves more talented than the two that just left might be thinking.  Yeah that's all good for a mercenary as G-man calls them, but ironically this is what G-man basically said that he preferred not to have.  Most of the guys still available have varying amounts of experience and degrees of tread left on the tire, and many of them may not want to come as a mercenary, much less leave as one.  And looking at the cap next year, they're probably thinking that this is the last place that they want to come unless they have to.

Gettleman may gave been able to do better by all parties involved this year (including, but noy limited to Nicks), but he made a Hardy gamble. So now we'll just have to sit back and relax, and see if it was worth it.

Gettelman can say that we are in a difficult situation but I'm still not going to be happy if we lose this season.

Plain and simple.

My thinking was he said all the "cap strapped" stuff to say we weren't going to be big players in FA'S. I'm cool with that. I'm not cool with it being a excuse to not produce a competitive team that should be going to the playoffs again. I can't excuse a regression with our talent and holes being so clearly defined and us being so close to a title last year.

What is your evidence that Gettlemen sold them on being a long term piece? At no point during the season or after that I can recall had Mitchell or Ginn or Captain etc gave any impression that they expected to be here next season. I haven't heard any reports of them being shocked or betrayed or possessing feelings of ill will. The fact that they wanted to be here next year doesn't mean at all they were led on. I don't see any evidence to support that theory.

So let me get this straight. You're telling me that Gettleman and the Panthers are getting a reputation in the league for picking up players that will be lucky to get anything more than the vet minimum, putting them in a system where they will excel and the following year sign contracts worth 10's of millions of dollars?

In what world is this a bad thing? If you sign a 1 year contract you plan to be somewhere for a year, I be that Ginn and Mitchell were staying in temporary accommodation while here because they didn't know where they would be the following year. There was no settling down, they now have long term contracts for a lot more money to settle down with.

Your logic is faulty.

I still believe Gettleman will set us up to be great in the future. We all knew we would have a difficult situation this and next season's FA. I do however hope we'll handle the LT situation quite fast, not much quality left on that position, and I can't see anyone plug in from the draft at the position we're drafting.

He talked about the guy in the past tense. That is considered a slight when the person is still around and un aware of this sentiment.

Oh my God. A grown man was "disrespected ". And all of the kids on here are having a tantrum and hissy fit.

The huddle is more hilarious this week than the best comedy movie of all time. You could not write a better and more ridiculous script than the way most on here are acting.

Thus fan base has passed both the cowboys and falcons as the most ridiculous .

Whatever. You're looking from a layman's perspective. Bottom line: Both of them are gone even though they wanted to stay. Mitchell repeatedly said that he wanted to be here, and Ginn basically said that he was "very surprised" that we didn't do more to try and keep him.

Yeah it's great to be a football player, and great to make hundreds of thousands---even millions----even if you have to move every year. Yeah, we'd take it. But, the fact is that they thought that they'd do it here, and I'm sure that Gettleman led them to believe that if they proved themselves, then that's exactly what would happen.  Mitchell and Ginn didn't come to Carolina expecting to leave. They bet on themselves, that they wouldn't have to. But, like you alluded to, they are football players at the end of the day.

BTW, Of course they were staying in temporary housing they had to prove themselves. Furthermore, many football players live in so-called "temporary housing" as a matter of business, regardless.  If you come here , with the cap situation as it is, you better live in temporary housing.  Some of these guys are more marginal players than Ginn and Mitchell anyway.

So would you like to have Mitchell and Ginn back in exchange for Hardy?

Sent from my SM-N900V using CarolinaHuddle mobile app

Right because

Mitchell - 5 million per season + Ginn's 3.5 per season = Hardy's 12 million per season.

Lol I'm just playing.

Although I'd rather have Nicks and Collins over Hardy. Considering we have serviceable replacements for Hardy already on the roster. Something we don't have for Gross and Smith.
