Replacing Last Season's Scoring Production

Recommended Posts

Panthers free agents that have already signed elsewhere combined for 8 touchdowns last season. Throw in Steve Smith who will not be back and Brandon LaFell and Drayton Florence who could be going elsewhere, that tally rises to 18 total TDs.

If you subtract the 114pts Gano scored kicking the football, the Panthers scored a total of 252pts. Of those remaining 252pts, players no longer on our roster or in jeopardy of playing elsewhere next season combined for 108 of them. That means those responsible for roughly 43% of our scoring production last year, outside of Gano, are no longer at our disposable.

The good news is that Tolbert, Cam, and Olsen (our three leading touchdown scorers) are still on this roster and those three had 19 TDs/ 114pts or 45% of our total scoring production last season. The remaining 12% of our scoring production (not including kicks by Gano) came from DeAngelo Williams and Melvin White. Below is an ordered list of everyone on our team that scored a touchdown last season.

Mike Tolbert - 7 TD

Cam Newton - 6 TD

Greg Olsen - 6 TD

Ted Ginn - 5 TD

Brandon LaFell - 5 TD

Steve Smith - 4 TD

Deangelo Williams - 4 TD

Captain Munnerlyn - 2 TD

Domenik Hixon - 1 TD

Drayton Florence - 1 TD

Melvin White - 1 TD

The bad news is that I actually believe those 18 TDs scored by players no longer on the roster or potentially playing elsewhere next season will be somewhat difficult to improve upon considering whoever is brought in offensively will have little to no chemistry with Cam initially and/or be a rookie. I am hopeful we can score some more defensive touchdowns than we did last season.

Just some food for thought.

You seriously added defensive touchdowns to a list trying to show how much for offensive production we lost?

i dont want to replace the production we had last year. we were in the basement in league stats for total offense. it'd be hard to do much worse and i'll be very disappointed if we repeat. i'll be pissed if we get worse. bright future for a young, talented team with a smart GM & coaching staff. #believe and #keeppounding

I don't get how 'rookies' are a bad thing when we just had a very productive draft class last year. We have top talent evaluators and top teachers on our staff. The draft is loaded with talent at the positions we need it at. I have no doubt that picking up 2 WR in this draft can overcome at least Ginn and LaFell maybe more. You can't always be afraid of young guys or inexperienced guys getting thrown into the fire. That's the only way they get a chance; whether its because we have very little at the position or if our vet. players get injured. Young guys gotta play. We have a structure to make those types of players successful here and I believe that if they have the want and desire to succeed they will play better than people seem to be expecting.
