“I want to make sure that whatever team I go to, they’re going to get the best, in shape 35-year-old guy they can get. If that happens to run through Bank of America Stadium, put your goggles on cause there’s going to be blood and guts everywhere,” Smith said

If we want to be a winning franchise, then we can't make emotional decisions.

And honestly, I seriously doubt there was any easy way to part with a guy like Smitty.

You don't wanna go back to the way it was under Hurney, do you?

spare us all the crap. of course you can make emotional decisions and be a winning franchise. They jsut have to be the right emotional decisions.parting with SS was not the right decision and certasinly was not right jsut because it was an emotional one.

Keeping SS has nothing to do with the way it was with Hurney. That is just a fear tactic by attaching Hurneys name to SS.

Our GM sure did....

Based on what?  Any actual evidence to support that or just your own theories?

Might wanna read the official statement...

When I took this position I knew that difficult decisions would have to be made along the way. To move on from a storied veteran player is probably the most difficult of all. A decision not to be taken lightly. However, after much thought I feel very strongly it’s the right one.

As I’ve stated many times, all decisions I make will be in the long term best interest of the Carolina Panthers. Decisions, either popular or unpopular, have to be made for the greater good and it is imperative to take an unemotional global view.

Sometimes it may appear that short term interests will suffer, and I can assure you we have no interest in taking a step back from our 2013 accomplishments. Nevertheless, like all NFL teams, we are in transition as we try to get into the best position going forward. When Mr. Richardson hired me I promised him that my goal would be to leave the Panthers in a better position than when I came. All my efforts are in that vein.

Over the next few months we will have the opportunities afforded by Free Agency and the College Draft to improve our roster. We also have young players who will get an opportunity. I have great trust in our evaluation process.

Steve had a wonderful career with the Carolina Panthers. I truly wish him and his wife, Angie, all of God’s blessings.

The only emotional thing in that statement was the last sentence.

Tell me you're not really dumb enough to think Smith made the call to release him

That's one of the absolute goofiest ideas I've ever read on this board.

tell me you are not dumb enough to really think I said that? see above for second part of my post.

this does expalin why you say the things you do. You are confused.

Might want to actually read what the reporters who are paid to get the truth are saying. Oh wait that's right the media spins poo, how could I ever forget. Things got personal, Dave took exception, Dave is here Steve isn't. Don't want to believe it that's fine, but plenty of people who would know have been saying it.

From your post...

Panthers made no move SS took control and made the move, he made the call.

Guess that answers my question.

He actually made a point to say a new contract and new team would not erase that.  Sooo.....there's that.

like many here right now, its much emotional talking going on and later at some point we will all move on even Steve. a new contract/team might not erase the history but fresh beginnings redirect life. a new job does brings fresh hope to one who has been unemployed. i could see if was planning to not play again after last season. this was totally unexpected for all. unnecessary at this point, but unexpected. my issue is the way the handled the situation. why the heck would anyone want to trust these guys (DG/RR). very sketchy.

I don't think it is the reading part so much as the understanding. Look at other post and responses. There seems to be a disconnect from what the point is and what the point is thought to be.

You should listen to the interview and hear how genuine he was before making assumptions.  His kids are from here and he wants to continue to raise them here.  His family is happy here.  He said he's a husband and a dad now more than anything - more than football.  He's not going anywhere.
