Smith gone due to being outspoken about Shula

Let's talk pie charts. What percent of the stuff happening behind closed doors does anyone here actually know? If you show 5% or more, you are lying. Here is stuff I know and have heard:

89 did complain about Chud.

89 complained in the media about teammates like Clausen, for example.

89 (rumor I heard from a reporter) was going to Cam to undermine Shula. Could he have been making it difficult for Cam to flourish? If true, that is insubordination and could support my next point.

89 stated, in the media, that he was playing for career numbers.

89 punched teammates twice. Can you name an NFL player do ever do that once?

89 said that he did not help WRs on his team because they are competition.

89 got into rookie WRs heads in camp. I saw him embarrass a few at OTAs. (How many WRs that have been drafted since Smitty succeeded here? How many didn't? Was Smitty actually making developing WRs more difficult?

Yeah, its all Gettlemen. Blame the one guy whose decisions turned 7-9 into 12-4.

Smitty was a great player, but he had issues. We have no idea what happened, but if I am the GM, the list I just wrote is enough for me to release an aging WR whose productivity dipped below his salary level. Time to move on.

Could see this affecting DBs as well.

If Josh Norman suddenly has a pro bowl season and WRs start producing I will definitely be less upset about the move to cut Smitty.

And some of it pretty ugly, especially as it regards Newton.

From what I've seen and heard, it's pretty close. There was past issues, Gettleman came in and told Smith to stop the garbage and then word came out early last season that Smith was undermining Shula, hence they tried to trade him at that point last season.

Because of this and other issues with Smith's attitude the relationship between Cam and Smith started falling apart because Cam generally likes Shula and is a big reason he became the OC.

Smith's production dropped for what ever reason be it skill or something else on the team. Making his garbage not worth the trouble anymore with Cam taking more of a leadership role on the team last season.

Hence Cam is still here as the key leader of the team and Smith is gone.

Not saying it's true, but from what I've seen and been told it's really close.

If that is true, then his being gone is no shock.

No team in the NFL would put up with that kind of behavior.

I'm no fan of Shula.  He failed at Alabama miserably, and is very conservative and predictable as OC for us.  I mean do we have any other playcall for 3rd and 1 besides hand it to Tolbert?  The only reason he is OC is because Cam is comfortable with him.

With that being said, there wasn't much to work with as far as personel.  Steve Smith was a step slower and when he got injured everyone in the stadium could sense our offense wasn't going anywhere.  Cam had little protection and nobody on the outside that was going to do anything above average.  He was also handing off to two overpaid RBs that are B- at best.

So, I'm willing to give the offensive staff a little time to improve the personel before I write off Shula.  But, he has a lot to prove.

Did it lack points? Yes

If two guys shoot free throws and one makes 4 out 5 vs 6 out of 10......which is better?

Possession game. Carolina overall is going to get similar touches as the opponent. Carolina was top 10 in how efficient they were with the ball (points and yards)

We could of been better on O. Talent would have made us even more efficient. Shula stuff works when you pair it with a good D.

Guest Dark Knight

I haven't read much of the thread, but has there been something said concerning Cam and Steve's relationship going sour?

I wouldn't doubt it.

Cam respects Steve's career but I bet he was getting tired of a 35yo with diminished skills riding his ass & demanding the ball.

Also, Smith is a married 35yo with his 4th kid on the way. Cam is 25yo & single with no kids. I doubt they were ever really close.

Nobody could ever accuse me of being on the Shula fan list.

But players need to shut up and play and let the coaches coach.  Don't want to play for the coach your CONTRACTUALLY OBLIGATED to play for?

RETIRE.

Or, I guess, just be a bitch about it in the locker room.
