we had a winning record b/c Shula played to compliment the D.  He played to them AND helped them be good.  It wasn't sexy but it helped us OVERACHIEVE as a team.

I think Gross acted as a buffer for Smith, so when Gross retired the writing was on the wall... they were viewed as a package deal.
