but this is nothing new... hasbeen going on for years. nevertheless, i personally believe smitty leaned into dg at that recent meeting or  the post season interview dg was speaking of smitty when he said its not a team that hasn't let a big dog walk rather than hardy. either way dg may not be a fan of ss. they should have offered him a pay cut and retire him next year. he is mouthy but not T.O. nor dez

meh... either way he was certainly on his way out! these guys around here may not like to admit it but I've been saying it for a while now. he's a #3. Gross' retirement was all i needed to know as to the wrap up for the old heads. what bothers me about all this is that they are making out to be soooooo dramatic. he was good, great even at times, but its time to move forward. now, those rbs are a bigger issue.

Certainly looks like the plan. And yes, I think Nicks can produce more than Smith right now. 

 

This all could backfire if Gettleman's targets don't come here. So there is definitely a risk.

If he was a distraction he would have lost his captain status in 2009 (year after the punch) or 2011 (trade demand). He didn't. He called the player's-only meeting that righted the ship. The whole 'distraction' thing is a load of poo to discourage other teams from signing him.
