So I'm still trying to understand what the benefit is of delaying this move.

49% of his contract was guaranted. Nothing makes the guaranted salary and bonus go away. Its what the term Dead Money refers to. Restructuring just creates future dead money.

Can't get rid of Smith?  I say let's just screw the whole pooch.  We'll never be able to keep Cam at the rate we're going anyway so fug it.  Trade Cam to the Browns for their 1st three picks (the 4th, 26th, and 35th picks over all) under the condition they take Smith and his contract with him.

 

Then in the draft, trade the 4th pick to Vikings or Detroit (both of whom are rumored to want to move up) for their 1st and 2nd round this year along with a 1st rounder for next year.

 

That would give us 2 1st rounds,  3 second rounds and a extra 1st for next year.

 

Plus we don't have to worry about the cap space needed to resign Cam next year.
