Quick Question....

Can we really honestly replace both Gross' and Smitty's production? I don't think we'll be able to. And you're ignoring off the field contributions and leadership ability. Not a single person we could bring in to replace either of these two could step in and be a leader. Gross and Smith were the only players remaining from our Super Bowl run a decade ago and had been with the team the longest of anyone. We could draft a guy like Kelvin Benjamin and he could possibly put up 850 some yards and 5-10 tds or something like that (about Smitty's production or better stat-wise) but there's no way he could step in and mentor younger guys like King or McNutt (we don't know how they'll turn out) and even Cam. Neither could Nicks or Decker or anyone else. The biggest loss I think is Gross' and Smitty's influence on Cam's maturation and improvement. It could either pay off big and he'll step in and fill that role, OR he could get down about losing those two and their help and it would hinder his improvements.

Yes.   and if he was a distraction for Cam..................then,   his replacement may be even better,  with a more focused Cam at the helm.

Core players are no longer core players when their production can easily be replaced via draft or free agency.

I'm very curious to see how we replace the production of our Pro Bowl LT who by most accounts had one of his best seasons ever.

Smitty production in terms of stats shouldn't be too hard to replace, if we take a WR in the first it's not a long shot they can get 800 and 5. If we sign Nicks it's not a long shot he can get that. Those are two big IFs though, and that's not even considering the "production" that isn't in the stat books. We just lost two team captains. Gross's leadership and Smitty's passion will be nearly impossible to replace. I'm glad Cam is a captain and I'm glad the offense is ready and willing to follow him but he absolutely cannot replace what Gross and Smitty brought to the team. That's too much to ask any kid.

Then you suck.

However, it is only March and I like what Gettleman did last year. I am going to hold off and trust he knows what he is doing here. Something tells me if you could sit down and look at his 5 year plan you would feel much better. Right now we are just reacting to small bits and pieces.

agree... though that was a common hurney defense too.

we'll see. i'm still optimistic

What are you talking about?

What you're advocating (win now) is a short-term strategy that is bound to result in long-term failure at the expense of (possibly) short-term gain. On the other hand, slow-building a good young core (as we're doing) and resisting the urge to overspend on big names is how you build a team that can win year after year over an extended period, not just for 2-3 years before having to rebuild.

We haven't done anything this offseason to build any kind of young core. We've only lost guys. There have been no additions yet. Don't try and make out financial and grudge moves to be anything but that.

That could be a possibility, but I think it's highly unlikely. Name a logical reason that Cam would be distracted by Smitty? And please try to provide some evidence of Cam saying something along those lines.

How about Mike Mitchell's production? Remember how many years it took us to find competent safeties?

I loved Mitchell here and he was a great leader for that secondary. BUT he is definitely not worth $5M/year for us to have kept him. Godfrey can fill in and do just as good as he did behind our front 7, provided he's healthy.

Add in that Cam Newton and Luke Kuechly have most likely lost all interest in spending their careers here. So theres that.

you heard it here first folks

Cam Newton and Luke Kuechly don't care about the Carolina Panthers anymore because one player retired and the other was cut and some mediocre 1-year contract players walked.
